Heat Six: Battle of the Bands

The Byrds

Famous for their version of Dylan’s Mr. Tambourine Man the Byrds are so so so much more, loads of great folkish rock, check out their debut (aptly titled Mr. Tambourine Man) and Younger than Yesterday.

ELP

You’d think a band with Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer would be absolutely awesome wouldn’t you? Unfortunately it was not to be, check out Tarkus.

Fairport Convention

You’ve heard them play on Nick Drake albums, now listen to their own material, who’s that lovely voice and why is it so familiar you ask? Why it’s Sanny Denny who appeared on Led Zeppelin IV. Check out Liege and Lief, the rest of their albums are brilliant but not for the casual fan.

Blue Oyster Cult

So much more than Don’t Fear (The Reaper), what? Yes of course they are! They have that funny symbol over their O. They actually have loads of decent albums, but all of them need more cowbell.

Janis Joplin

Pearl is a masterpiece, unfortunately it was fashionable for people with talent to die when they reached the ripe old age of 27 so there was not more where that came from. Big Brother and the Holding Company is already nominated so I’m focusing only on her solo albums.

Gotta give it to ELP.

And it turns out they were.

Wuh? What would listening to Tarkus prove? Oh wait, that you're wrong, that's what it would prove.

Though I assume you mean the whole album, and granted side b is filler at best (though Bitches Crysta is still greatl) but the title track is just amazing.

I can't abide ELP and by this point I was sick of writing out proper little bios. I hated Tarkus it bored me to death, infact I can't stand any of their albums. I remember being so dissapointed after being told how great they were.

No question, The Byrds

Tarkus is an awesome song. I understand the hate for this band, but you could have given a more reasonable example, like Love Beach or something. Instead of pointing out one of their best works.

ELP only had 4 good albums in them, which is enough to convince me that they don't deserve all the hate they get.

I pointed out tarkus because that's the album I had forcefed down my throat, and I was told it would be awesome. And I was so ready for an epic album.

Eh, I don't really like ELP but I'm a fan of the Byrds.

Not an epic album, but an epic title track, that's for sure IMO.
