The Allman Brothers & Southern Blues-Rock
 

Hi folks,

I've been a long-time listener of many southern blues-rock bands and am trying to extend my reach beyond the main few bands (Allman Bros, Creedence, Lynard Skynard, even Little Feat to some extent), and wondered if anyone had any good recommendations? Bands like Free, the 'Dead, Blind Faith, Canned Heat, Steppenwolf, Cream are particular favourites too... I guess Terry Reid, David Crosby's "If Only I Could Remember My Name..." are in the right bracket too...

These guys are a little heavier than the above mentioned, but Alabama Thunderpussy and Sixty Watt Shaman are really groovy. If you you dig those cats, you may be able to ease into some quality southern rock influenced stoner metal like Clutch and Orange Goblin. Slightly more trad. southern rock would be Drive By Truckers. There's the great southern rock prog band, Capt. Beyond, which was signed to the same label as the Allman Bros. As a fallback, there's always Marshall Tucker, The Atlanta Rhythm Section, The Outlaws and lets not forget Molly Hatchet. Finally, if like Cream, you must track down Jack Bruce and Leslie West's project, West, Bruce and Laing, particularly the album, "Whatever Turns You On".

Lynyrd Skynyrd seem to be the definitive southern rock band for a lot of people.

But CCR, Allman Bros and Little Feat are all better.

Captain Beyond is a deserving mention too.

I agree Lynyrd Skynyrd is seen as the definitive Southernfried Rock band. But all those bands are very different from each other, so I wouldn't say they are better the Lynyrd Skynyrd, just different. CCR is part of the 60's West coast scene with bands like the Doors, and the Dead. CCR was more single oriented plus they some jam psychedelic songs on their album. Allman Bros were a little more steeped into the Blues than the rest. Duane Allman is considered one of the best Blues slide guitarist comparitively to other guitarist from either Blues or Rock side of the isle. I don't know much of Little Feat, but another good southernfried jam band is The Outlaws (the Def Leppard of Southern Rock -;) j/k)

Yeah The Outlaws are pretty sweet too.

I like Skynyrd alright, I just got a little tired of them, they haven't had the same lasting appeal with me as other classic rock radio standards like Zep, Rush and Queen. I don't really need to hear Free Bird again, though I can appreciate it as a great song.

Southern rock gets an unfair rap, because a lot of people hate Skynyrd, so a lot of people write off the southern rock genre based on that band alone, which is unfortunate.

Amazing multi-guitar work and an excellent sound, Mutt Lange could really produce an album.

My tiresome artist/bands are Dylan and The Who. It's a shame that The Band is only remember for backing Dylan when they back Jack Scott (from Canada) who was almost as popular as Elvis. The Band themselves I think can fall into the catagory of South Rock - more or less.


The feeling I got from listening to radio, and docs, and guitar tab mags & music rags, they assign each band a catagory they are ahead of, and that influence the way I think about them sometimes too - I guess. Like Skynyrd is best Southernfried rock, The Eagles were the best of the Country Rock of the 70's. The Byrds the best of the Folk Rock of the 60's. etc. etc. I think The Byrds are underrated in the whole catagory of Folk/Counrty/Rock. Roger McGuinn and Clarence White are both amazing talents. Personally I put the Allman Bros. Band in the same jam band class as Traffic etc. (besides being linked by E.C.) they both delved into different geres Country, Jazz, Blues and Rock. So I don't think of ABB vs LS in them same sub-genre if that makes any sense.

There are different resons for hating a band, musical taste or just being over-player, over-tauted. Sometimes hard rock and jam bands are too taxing for some peoples listening abilities, and they just write them off; unless they have other reasons for hating Skynyrd I don't see why, I think Skynyrd deserves the credit, they creative, played well and are tight as a band. And had a great sound, they were recorded by Tom Dowd (engineer and producer) who has a litany of artist he worked with in the studio.

I think overexposre is the stupidest possible reason to hate a band.

Just because Zeppelin, Floyd, Doors and The Who get radioplay nonstop doesn't take away from the fact that they're still amazing bands.

I just don't think Skynyrd belong in the same class as those bands.

If I did, I wouldn't care how much radioplay they got. There's a lot of classic rock radio standards who don't get as much praise as Skynyrd but should because they're just straight up better bands, like Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and Steely Dan.

I think Skynyrd is classic, I really haven't heard everything by Deep Purple Thin Lizzy and Steely Dan but they have these odd songs. Every so often I hear a song maybe during a recorded concert on cable etc I haven't heard before and think it's "meh." I wonder because it didn't get airplay it sounds mediocre or does it sound mediocre because it didn't get airplay and I'm not fimiliar with it. Radio is ok in the car but it has it's faults like playing a band too much, or not at all.
I skipped over getting into bands like The Who, Pink Floyd, because they got so much airplay that I wanted to look for other less fimiliar music. Ernie Kovacs once said "Hollywood has one formula: if it works then beat it to death." That's true about radio, maybe that is what happen to Skynyrd.

I listen to classic rock radio usually because I dont have an ipod and it takes too much time deciding on what cds to play.

I enjoy classic rock when it's stuff like Zep, Floyd, Rush, Sabbath, Queen, The Doors, CCR, Steely Dan, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and so on. If there's a song that I get tired of from being played too much, I'll just change it to something else, usually the jazz or funk station.

When I go for a long time without hearing certain songs because I got tired of hearing them, when I listen to them again after an extended period it can be a great rediscovery.

And since I've avoided Skynyrd for a good while, someday I might get into them again, who knows?

I will always hate Foreigner though. :mad:
