I feel like I heard this song when I was a little kid, but that's pretty unlikely.

Dimebagdaryl 07-22-2010 01:49 AM

if only more of the 60 bands were still around in full this would be a great generation be thankful some still are

just think if most of those bands could still be touring now ive seen a few bands that got their starts in the 60s zz top the moody blues mountain...
i still have hopes 4 another stones tour
the beatles the doors hendrix could still be touring
so ive seen the 60s 70s 80s 90s.. not so bad just unfortunate what happened to these bands id be great to see em now
sex drugs and rock n roll got to them

I know what you mean! I was born March 1991, yet the only music I love is from the 80's! I should have been born in the mid 70's, that way I could grow up through the 80's!

the ONLY music you like is from the 80s? Why? What's wrong with music from the 60s, 70s, 90s and now?

I shouldn't say only, I do listen to other music, I just really have a thing for 80's music! It started up when I bought my first car, a 1992 Camaro. It's an 80's body style and everything about it screams 80's. I loved cruising around it it listening to Def Leppard, Scorpions, Pat Benetar, Iron Maiden, The Fixx, etc, etc, and from there on, I started watching Knight Rider, and I developed a "thing" for 80's stuff :)

TheCunningStunt 08-15-2010 02:58 AM

80s hair metal *shudder*

80s had some good, but it was littered with so much shit. Like most decades I guess, but 80s even more so.

TumorAttitude 08-15-2010 10:47 AM

I wonder if I would have even discovered the music I like from the 80s and 90s if I had grown up in it.......doubtful.

TheCunningStunt 09-04-2010 06:00 PM

So what? Music stopped being good in the 70s? The 80s? early 90s?

You don't HAVE TO listen to crap like Justin Bieber, you simply take the good with the bad. And choose to listen to the good, whilst avoiding the bad.

90s was a brilliant decade for music, the 00s was a good decade for America (Britain didn't have too much going though.) There's always been great music. It just so happens we were born in a generation where we have all that music to our disposal. This thread kind of annoys me.

TheCunningStunt 09-04-2010 06:22 PM

Because technology is better than it's ever been means that bands can make their studio work sound better than they do live, I don't see the problem with that. Music is still about having talent, the 80s were brilliant as were the 90s and 00s were good. You just have to ignore the rubbish, and focus on the good. Music didn't stop being good in 1979.

I've only ever heard 40 seconds of a Justin Bieber song, something with 'baby' in it. Then I turned it off. Music doesn't tend to follow me around, I never quite get how it follows some people around. But it does seem to.

It's not about testing new guys, I just think there's so many decades worth of music out there. And so many genres out there. And I find it really irritating that people can just write them off, I see people mainly writing stuff off because of ignorance. I'm not being aggressive, it's just my posting style I think. I'm quite blunt in that way, I'm a softy really. :D

I use the 'New Posts' function. I click every thread, even if it's just to get rid of it from the 'New Posts' feed. If something catches my eye, I'll reply. Regardless of whether it makes me mad. Is that okay with you?

Who are some of your favourite artists? I'm guessing you like quite a bit of Classic Rock? The Beatles, The Doors, Floyd etc.

TheCunningStunt 09-04-2010 07:50 PM

Going back to the whole studio vs live thing, most bands I like and listen to would rather not polish their sound. A lot of bands actually go for a lo-fi sound, because it's "cool". They basically use the lo-fi production to blanket the quality of songs. Some bands however decide to have an unpolished album, yet the quality of song writing is still good. Some artists may choose to have their music more polished, and if it sounds good on the record but they can't quite produce that sound live then so be it. One of my favourite bands, The Smiths for example. Johnny Marr could never quite recreate that guitar sound on How Soon Is Now? from the album version. He didn't know how he got that sound. Does that mean he lacked talent because he couldn't quite recreate that sound live? No. Same applies to many bands.

I didn't mean to come across as an arse, but it annoys me because it's so easy to look at Justin Bieber, JLS and Lady Gaga and totally write off music from the 00s. I don't think it comes down to personal preference, if I'm honest I don't know if I could pick a favourite decade. I think there's so much music out there, and only concentrating on a certain period (whether it's the 60s or 70s) limits yourself dramatically.

Floyd bores me to tears. I thought you'd be into The Who, The Doors, The Stones etc.
Usually Floyd follows that list.

IWP 09-05-2010 06:57 AM

I should have been born in 65-70 so I could've grown up in the 80s, because that decade was so my style!

TheCunningStunt 09-05-2010 07:38 AM

Well, if your problem with computers stems from the use of them in Electronic based music/Hip-Hop, then that's just silly. Listen to Aphex Twin - Richard D James album or DJ Shadow - Entroducing, absolutely brilliant music. Unless you're just writing off entire genres based on what you hear in the charts, commercial Hip-Hop then that's a bit silly. I think it's only okay to write off a genre once you've explored it. I'm guessing by the bands you're into, you're very anti Hip-Hop and anti Electronica, but I'd guess you haven't given it much of a chance? (Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm just make wild assumptions.)

I used to be the same as you. I used to like "plug in and play" bands, none of this synth stuff, none of this electronic based stuff. Even though I'm not a connoisseur of the music, by any means I still like bits of it and I can appreciate. You should broaden your horizons and step out of the 70s ;)

downwardspiral 09-05-2010 08:23 AM

I get really depressed looking back at all the amazing shows and festivals back in the day which I would've loved to have gone to. But I'm happy right now, I'm still able to listen to the music though which is even more than enough so I wouldn't class myself as being born in the wrong generation as such.

Late 80s, the entire 90s and early 00's were amazing amazing years for music. <3

TheCunningStunt 09-05-2010 09:25 AM

I think the bottom line is, you have issues with Pop stars who use technology to make themselves sound better? That doesn't mean modern music is bad, it means that some parts of it is bad. A lot of modern bands don't use the things that are available to them, because they want a more pure sound. A lot of proper artists will choose to use certain things available to them in the studio, and ignore others - and that's fine. I think we had our wires crossed, because I thought you meant technology is bad full stop. But you did mention Hip-Hop... I don't think there's anything wrong with technology in genres like Hip-Hop and Techno. You weren't clear on that, I thought you were just writing it off all together. If the likes of Justin Bieber who have very little talent want to make themselves sound good through using autotune or whatever, then good luck to them. Modern music transcends that, because a lot of modern artists would never do that. I just think it's really quite easy to look at all the bad and judge it without really focusing on the good.

Dayvan Cowboy 09-05-2010 09:31 AM

actually, today's music is pretty good. Though, I wish I was born in the Eighties so I could appreciate all of the great dance/IDM and Avant-Rock of the nineties. that would have been awesome!

but yet again, back then, there wasn't much filesharing so music would have been hard to find :(

TheCunningStunt 09-05-2010 09:56 AM

I'm set in my ways? Aren't you the one who came into this thread saying "I hate my generation, all a bunch of lazy no talent."

Now you've turned round and said you're not bashing current rock music? I thought they were ALL a bunch of lazy no talent?

 I didn't offer you How Soon Is Now to prove current music isn't crap, I offered you How Soon Is Now to show you that despite getting that great sound in the studio, they couldn't recreate that sound live. Which was part of the problem for you (people making music through computers, but they couldn't transfer that sound to live events)

You've gathered from me I think virtually all music is worthy of excellence? Urm, what? I think there's good stuff in every decade, as well as bad stuff. If that's me thinking "all music is worthy of excellence" then so be it.

And modern music isn't filled with things you're preaching against. Like I said before, loads of bands are true to their roots but hypothetically... let's say music evolved and artists took advantage of technology a whole lot more than they are doing now. If there's substance to their songs, would you be against it because they base their sound solely on computers?

TheCunningStunt 09-05-2010 10:27 AM

"I hate my generation, all a bunch of lazy no talent."

And I'm the ignorant one?

I've never actually said "weed the bad out", so stop quoting that. I said ignore the bad, and focus on the good.

Dayvan Cowboy 09-05-2010 10:31 AM

Today's music really isn't that bad. The underground and the indie scene has a lot of good stuff...

Like Post-Rock

I'm against Prog as well, Post-Rock and Prog seem to go hand in hand. Everything I've heard bores me, I think I've closed the door on finding entertaining Post-Rock because it's never happened. Maybe one day a band will jump out at me that I enjoy. Sigur Ros make me want to lose the will to live.

Sigur Ros and Godspeed! aren't the only post rock bands that exist.

Here's the band I won't shut up about:

Here's an electronic/post rock band called God Is An Astronaut

And So I Watch You From Afar made one of 2009's best albums: here's my favourite song:

Math Rawk time! (Math Rock has a lot to do with Post-Rock)

I would have liked to visit the 70's more actually. Maybe late 60's-early 70's.

The thing I liked best about then was that there was no internet, so people actually went out and did stuff, creative things. Now all us teens are cooped up at home, typing away at keyboards and staring into this flat, eye-killing screen.

Back then, everyone actually got involved with the rest of the world.

I lived through the 70s and it was awesome. I got to see Star Wars in the theater in 1977....I remember when I threw a fit because my parents wouldn't let me go and see Alien at the local drive in. lol.

My taste in music as a kid was horrible though, I loved the Partridge Family and Shaun Cassidy.
