Music recommendation for fan of '50s-'70s music?
I am looking for some new music to listen to. My favourite groups/artists are The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Eagles, Simon and Garfunkel, John Denver, and Billy Joel. I've listened to bits of the more famous bands like Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, etc.
I'm hoping that somebody will know of a music artist I will enjoy. I can't say I enjoy metal at all. Something with a melody, a bit of harmony, and ideally a piano/keyboard presence. Thanks, and if you are looking for a simlar music recommendation, feel free to post it! |
Tame Impala makes some good Beatles-esque psychedelic music that you might enjoy.
Haha, "Beatles-esque" is an understatement. More like Beatles ripoff. |

That. In particular ... Beach Boys fans might also appreciate this from Animal Collective. Good discussion and other examples were in the "Pop Music of yesterday vs. Pop Music of Today" thread starting about here. Surell got me hooked on Animal Collective back in June in that thread and I've been checking out a lot of other, similar/related bands since then. Lots of good stuff out there, contrary to popular belief. Based on your list of bands you like (down to and including John Denver), you sound like you have extremely similar musical tastes as me, so I might be your go-to guy at this point on recent musical recommendations. |

I take it that you already know these bands, but if you haven't I think starting off with their greatest hits - imo they're well worth it.

Heavily Spaced | Each Other
Kinda sounds old-timey. Vocalist sounds a little bit like Mike Love from The Beach Boys. |
How about Harry Nilsson? Everyone can use a little Nilsson in their life.

I've heard of almost all of the older groups you mentioned, but I've never really listened to them, with the exceptions of a bit of The Byrds, The Kinks, Chicago and Jim Croce. And I'd heard of none of the newer groups with the exceptions of First Aid Kit and The Wallflowers. Thanks, and I'll definitely give them all a listen. |
I've heard a bit of Each Other, and I quite like.
The only thing I've heard by Nilsson is his cover of You Can't Do That, which was pretty cool. Thanks for all the recommendations! |

As for older music you may not have heard, if you like the Beatles I can practically guarantee you will like Todd Rundgren's Something/Anything album. It is, IMO, the best double-album ever. I had a college roommate get me into this album (waaay back in the mid-80's) and it's been a staple of my listening ever since. A few goofy songs on the album, but otherwise not a bad song at all. EDIT: BTW, Todd Rundgren is also a big influence on Kevin Parker. In fact, if you listen to the first song in the video above, you'll notice the main melody is very similar to part of the 2nd half of Mind Mischief on the previous page. It was late, last night I was feeling something wasn't right ... And: She remembers my name Could be blown way out ... |

I remember Me and My Arrow from a 70's commercial for the Plymouth Arrow. :D

One of the best 'live' bands ever, Jo Jo Gunne.

The Sonics! Such a great band. Gloriously f-d up early garage primitivism. Right up there with the Monks for me. Psycho!!!!
|
Don't forget Tommy James and the Shondells!
When it comes to psych-garage, the Pebbles series is really fun. If you can find any of the volumes. Oh, and on the harmonic side of things, I don't think anyone mentioned the Mamas and the Papas. As for 60's revival bands, I don't know many besides the Pandoras, Barracudas, Miracle Workers, etc. Also the Cramps, if they count. And yeah, definitely check out the Sonics, people recommend them for a reason. Edit: I forgot the 70's entirely! But I think you already know the great bands of that era, seeing as how classic rock stations tend to have a penchant to play 70's and 80's songs. I'll mention Bad Company though, for being a mix of almost everything that defined the 70's musically. Blondie was really fun as well, with a million radio hits. Also, look up a few Post-Punk bands if you ever get bored, they're always fun. The Mo-dettes, the Rezillos, Kleenex, etc. Very weird, but really exciting for some reason. |

That's why having a forum like this is so awesome! I get to hear about new bands based on my tastes! |
Ha! I like this thread, it's the one where I got Pet_Sounds hooked on Tame Impala and Animal Collective.
