Good Female Fronted Classic Rock?
 

When I think of classic rock with female vocals I often think Janis Joplin. Maybe Fleetwood Mac. Obviously bands like Jefferson Airplane and Joan Jett but, what I'm really curious about is, were there female rock bands before their time? Such as before the 60's or, perhaps in the 60's as well.

I know a lot of older pop artists like The Carpenters, The Shangri Las (kinda pop rock) Nancy Sinatra, and Etta James etc. but, rarely can I find something a little more rock an roll.

So does it exist? I'm sure there are bands out there but, are there ones really worth mentioning? Some undergroud stuff would be really cool. Also, it's really annoying that like 90% of the songs were about love at that time so I'd like to avoid that as well personally but, feel free to post anything you think fits the bill.

I've only gotten through the pre 60's at the moment but, I had to comment and say thanks so much for all the awesome material! Really loved how a lot of them played the guitar themselves! Please, keep them coming I will listen to everything. : D

If you like that kind of music, I highly recommend the Girls in the Garage series. It's chock full of random obscure goodness from the sixties, and was what originally got me into the weird and wonderful world of Garage Rock. Anyway, here are some more songs... :laughing:

Heart

I made it through the 60's/70's list great stuff. Really love was it The Liverbirds? Awesome band. I hate it when people say women can't rock out I mean look at all these amazing bands.

Yeah, The Liverbirds were great! They were from Liverpool, and relocated to Hamburg to play in the Star Club alongside The Beatles. Unlike The Beatles, who made it big in the states, The Liverbirds were popular mostly in Germany.

The same thing kinda happened to Suzi Quatro, the lead singer of The Pleasure Seekers (the band that Screen13 posted up there). She relocated at the beginning of her solo career (from Detroit to the UK), and had a hard time breaking back into her home country, although she did eventually score a top ten hit on the american charts.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. Here's a fun song from the '60s:

Joy of Cooking, soft rock/ country flavored, early 70s

Just were not many earlier, of course there was Grace Slick and Janis Joplin,
and lets not forget Michelle and Cass with The Mamas and the Papas.

of course there were all the "girl groups"of the 50s and 60s even if they were strictly vocals and not rock bands in the true sense. Some fun music though,like the Shangri-las , Marvelettes, etc and of course the Motown soul sound of such as the Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas.
