ok. I think I found it. 70 or 80 years after any composer's death, their music enters the public domain. You cannot use "recorded" music, but you can use the musical composition itself and play it...

True, that's how it used to be. But in the 1940s and 1970s (I think) they changed aspects of the copyright laws and I don't know if that included classical music. I've googled, but I haven't seen...
