I think the angry riff in I Want You by the Beatles is quite proto grunge. I could easily hear that in some Nirvana song, though I doubt it had any specific influence over the genre.

Nirvana for me. There are only one or two Foo Fighters songs that I think measure up to the best Nirvana stuff. Nirvana were also pioneers which counts for a lot in my opinion.
