I think NYC was the more immediate precursor with the more direct connection but I agree with you that Detroit was really important as well and a huge influence on the NYC bands.

I know you think that but I disagree. The Sex Pistols sounded a hell of a lot more like the NYC bands than Bowie, Roxy Music, Alice Cooper, Can and Hawkwind. The connection is pretty obvious to me...

I agree but I'm just talking about who is most "punk". In terms of who I like the best I'd easily take a band like Television any day over a band like the Ramones.

The Clash wins this by a long shot for me, but at the same time I think the Ramones embody punk ideals a lot more.
