Well you're right that those are two of the Pixies' poppier songs. But Nirvana were fairly poppy too so I don't see them as very far removed from the even the poppiest of Pixies tunes.

So does a lot of the Pixies music. I'm not saying Nirvana sound exactly like the Pixies, I'm just saying they were very heavily influenced by them and Kurt Cobain said as much himself.

I think it will most definitely be easier to see in 5 or 10 years. To me it seems like music is just as fresh and unique (and derivative and backward-looking) as it has been in previous decades.
