If anything I would say the opposite, I think American idiot was more of a nod to the old way of making music. The Rock Opera tracks, the themed album, prior to that they just made a lot of poppy...

This and Dookie are both very good albums, regardless of what the "snobs" here have to say. There is no reason not to enjoy American Idiot or Dookie they are both really good albums and a lot of fun....
