I've been a member of no less than 4 forums whose members have created subsites for similar reasons, and I administrated a forum from startup a few years ago.

All 5 of those projects failed...

If this happened it would die, I'm fairly sure. On the other hand, if it took off, I'd still post on both, so I'm not losing anything.

I say do it, but be very prepared for it to fail.
