in that case where he didn't notice a change after moving the saddle wouldn't it be possible that the saddle is just too low to do anything besides keep the string straight? might need to be raised...

i've never done this myself so this is entirely speculation, but i'd think you would want to move the saddle closer to the bridge so that the tension is increased.
