So in effect whoever gets the most first placed votes still wins the election, they just add on other votes in order to boost the result to abouve 50%?

lol no I know that. I voted for the first time last year (eventually, I couldnt find the entrance to my local polling station for about half an hour).

Yeah, I'm getting leaflets that there is a vote on whether we should have an 'alternative vote', and havent the foggiest what its all about (as you have probably been able to tell already).

Can someone explain it to me? It doesnt seem to make any sense at all. From what I gather, we vote for three people instead of one, rank them in order of preference (but they are all of equal worth)...
