I can't answer the pronunciation question...

I can't answer the pronunciation question accurately, not being American.
And my experience of U.S. accents is limited to TV, where I'm more than certain I've heard "than" pronounced as "then"....

Every example of those two words being swapped around on these boards has always been typed by an American.
I noticed this years ago and still see it occasionally.
