The main thing for singing preparations is to 'warm up' your voice. Like a warm up for sport, this is all about gently starting to work the parts of your body which you'll be using until your body is ready to start performing. For warming up I'd tend to just sing some quiet songs which are in the middle of my range (an analogy to walking on a treadmill perhaps), and then do some easy scales going from the bottom to the top of my range and back down (an analogy to stretching you muscles).

Don't smoke as it damages or destroys alveoli (think that's right), which are the little air sacks in your lungs. If these are damaged it decreases your lung capacity and hence will limit the length and power of phrases which you're able to sing. Also it can cause various types of burn related irritations to your whole respiratory system, giving you more problems with controlling the airflow in general.

Soda. Not a good idea just before singing as it'll make you gassy and you'll end up burping instead of singing. Other than that its not such a problem for singing.

Exercises:
In terms of SINGING EXERCISES there are plenty of different things you can do - I'd do an internet search for this if I were you. Maybe its a good idea to tape yourself singing first, so that you can identify which are the weaker points in your singing (looking for tuning, breathing, phrasing, range) and therefore what you should work on. This'll allow you to focus your search for singing exercises more.

I was hoping someone knew some exercise so I wouldn't have to search(I dont feel like it.)

How do you stretch the diaphram? I read about this thing were you have your hands on your belly and try something......Iam not sure..

Well, I'll try to remember some, although I'm not convinced that if you're too lazy to search for the exercise that you'll have the energy to try them out...

1. Diaphragm exercise - Stand up straight (not rigid though). Keeping your shoulders relaxed, rest both of your hands lightly over your belly button. Inhale in as fully as you can - for me it works if to imagine that my torso is inflating from somewhere in its very centre. Once you have inhaled fully, expel all of the air with a loud 'huh' or 'ha', trying to get all of the air out in one go. Two things to remember are:
i) You're trying to get as much air as possible into your lungs, so don't allow any other part of your body to restrict the size to which your lungs can expand.
ii) The best way to get the air out quickly is by rapidly pulling in your stomach, which forces the diaphragm upwards. You can feel how well you are achieving this as you have your hands on your stomach.

2. Breath control exercise - Take a small piece of paper (about 4x4 cm), face a smooth wall and hold the paper on it a mouth height. Start to blow on the paper (at a right-angle to the plane of the paper), remove your hand from the paper and keep the paper on the wall for as long as possible by using the airflow coming from your mouth.

Exercises related to tuning and articulation you can perform youself. Sing different scales, different rhythms, use metronomes and guitar tuners in different ways. If your going to be singing in a band then make sure you do some singing to backing, not just singing along to CDs, as this will allow you to develop your sound, timing and tuning properly.

haha! Iam not lazy, I would rather take someones word for it... thank you anyways....

Heres a singing tip, don't impersonate anyone well.

if you play guitar you can sing along with scales, trying to hit notes, and once you have once scale you can go higher or lower on the guitar. tis what i do.

DontRunMeOver 11-22-2005 03:58 AM

Also, if possible, start singing before you learn to play guitar or piano. Because its so easy to find your notes on the guitar/piano it somehow seems to mess up your ability to sing in tune once you start singing.

Well, maybe its not as severe as that, but I'd say that guitar and piano are the two instruments which least prepare you to learn singing - they're pretty much the furthest removed instruments from the voice in terms of technique.

Before singing do NOT have Chocolate or cheese;)
