Bob Dylan?

What do you guys think about his lyrics? My opinion is that they are possibly the greatest ballads and protest songs ever but people that i hang out with hate them and think they're weird.

PaperHurricanesAndPlanes 08-31-2008 10:22 AM

MY opinion is that this doesn't belong in this part of MusicBanter. But hey, I'm no mod. Take it away, Urban!

rasta man 08-31-2008 10:26 AM

dude, there not as good as u say they are, but there alright. John lennon has some of the strongest protest song out there.

PaperHurricanesAndPlanes 08-31-2008 12:15 PM

BD doesn't do it for me. Great songwriter. Terrible singer.

He sure sucked live.

Folkie 08-31-2008 12:26 PM

im not talking about how he played or his singing im talking about his lyrics

Wifey Boozer 08-31-2008 03:36 PM

I can't believe there's not another Bob Dylan thread on all of MB .

At least now we have one in the songwriting forum.

Pawned.

Bob Dylan is especially great with lyrics.
His voice, on the other hand, is a different matter.

Wifey Boozer 09-01-2008 08:24 AM

Since we're discussing this, a penny for my thoughts.

Bob is one of my favorite artists of all time. I think his lyrics are poetry. And call my crazy, but I do like the man's voice. It's raw, honest. Fits his lyrics.

Folkie 09-01-2008 08:28 AM

^^ same here as weird as it sounds

Wifey Boozer 09-01-2008 08:37 AM

Great. Now I have something in common with Folkie.

ProggyMan 09-02-2008 11:58 PM

BD is one of my favorite vocalists ever.
And if my thought-dreams could be seen/they'd probably put my head in a guillotine/but it's alright ma/it's life and life only-Bobby D

i dont get it (probably a generational thing)
hes a great lyricist
not a great songwriter
you gotta write more than a few acoustic chords and some trad blues to qualify as a great songwriter for me.

FireInCairo 09-03-2008 05:50 AM

plus the dude doesnt sing he mumbles...

Wifey Boozer 09-03-2008 07:49 AM

^ On the contrary, I never misunderstand what Bob's saying in his songs. It's not mumbling, that's just his regular, shaky voice. I dig it.

He's done much more than that, I'm not sure where people get this argument...

FireInCairo 09-04-2008 01:44 AM

cause thats all singersongwriters ever seem to do...
and hes the archetype
i dotn know enough of his discography to argue
but from what ive heard
overrated to the max

Wifey Boozer 09-04-2008 06:36 AM

Do the homework before you hand-in the paper ;)

FireInCairo 09-04-2008 06:40 AM

im not saying i havent heard a lot
just not his entire discography...

ProggyMan 09-04-2008 07:40 PM

What have you heard? Christ, he's nothing if not eclectic. He's hardly an archetypical singer-songwriter.

The Picadilly Boy 09-07-2008 01:42 PM

I agree that Dylan's great, but you've got to admit he's a bit corny and when that mixes with Country and the small amount of Techno he's brought to his music it does sound a bit weird... but don't get me wrong I love Dylan. My older brother and my dad played him for me like three years ago, strangely enough though I havnt bought a CD of his yet.

Surell 09-07-2008 02:21 PM

He does have a strange singing voice, but I think he does it well. His lyrics are great, too. One of my favorites.

Dylan brought a small amount of techno to music?

How is he corny? Where are you getting this? No, Lay Lady, Lay doesn't count.

Mordoth 09-07-2008 09:16 PM

the times, they are achangin'

stevesonthebay 09-09-2008 10:22 PM

yeh i like what he says, not just words and he has a different sound. his voice is unique better than some of those nice voices we here all the time that are comerically viable and sing about the same old stuff. it gives hope to us less vocally challenged, if only i could wright like him. others that come to mind like guthrie and cohen also have lyrics that say something.

Folkie 09-13-2008 08:38 PM

^^ ya i cant sing worth crap so i really loom up to him 0_o
