my bassist doesn't get it

ok so my bassist and I write all the songs. hes an amazing bassist, hes good at keyboard, and a great song writer, but he has no life. So as a result all his songs are meaningless to him and he doesn't really care and doesn't know what its like to really look deep and feel the bond and the power you have with w/e instrument ur playing and using the power to write a meaningfull song. Me on the other hand, i do have a life and i write all my stuff about real things, and there good songs. some are really good, but he makes fun of lyrics he doesn't get, and there not even that dumb, for example one line which is probably the "funniest" but it really isn't is "your a fish already caught, that doesn't make me distraught" and he thinks its dumb i say the word "fish". if anyone has gone through crap like this please give advise, cause i really do apreciate his opinion, no matter how crude and anoying it may be, but his below the belt jabs at my songs make the rest of the band think there dumb too, and then they go from being works of art into hearless notes.

OceanAndSilence 02-06-2010 09:10 PM

fish is a pretty funny word, bro.

-_-

Dr_Rez 02-06-2010 11:47 PM

I hate to say it but isnt meaning in the eye of the beholder?

primo 02-07-2010 12:27 AM

Haha I'm assuming the line refers to the "plenty of fish in the sea" saying. I say dw - it probably just sounds funnier in writing.

NumberNineDream 02-07-2010 04:29 AM

I think you'd get more respect if you write "you're" instead of "your".

littleknowitall 02-07-2010 04:50 AM

It's his first post, all of you start being supportive this instance.

t3hplatyz0rz 02-07-2010 06:20 AM

OKAY!
Supportiveness, activate!
FISH IS A FUNNY WORD.

OceanAndSilence 02-07-2010 08:47 AM

how about "you're a dish already scrubbed, I'm not distraught but I will eat food off you"?

I think it has pizazz bro

justrick 02-07-2010 11:15 AM

egh... it's just a stylistic disagreement... happens to me a lot... in my band we vote the song in or out with little or no revision... anything that doesn't cut the mustard goes into that that member's stack of "solo" material...
I can't do collaborative song writting... Its too personal... even the retarded stuff

If the example you posted is something you consider a work of art then I congratulate your bass player on grounding you in reality.

Works of art indeed

There is no forum more helpful than music banter. I think we've already made this guy feel better.

t3hplatyz0rz 02-07-2010 07:26 PM

lolwut?
That was the only thing that could have made this better.

Have you told him that this bothers you?
One of the reasons to be in a band is to bounce ideas of each other in order to improve, right?
This is really hard if you write from your heart, because it is easy to take the criticism too personally when you have put so much of yourself into your lyrics. When that happens it's almost impossible to stay open to suggestions.
This tends to get easier the more experience one gets, n hopefully it gets so easy that one actually takes advise that makes the songs better...
If not, then a solo-project is the only choice... n well even then you can't really get away from learning to handle criticism... unless you never share your music, but that is a sad sheltered choice...
Good luck either way

justrick 02-10-2010 11:46 AM

i think you should tell the bassist that your lyrics are impecabile, the total end all be all maya angelu aint got sh*t on me gold standard... and if he dont like it he can cram it...

bandteacher1 02-10-2010 12:34 PM

While it is an interesting choice of words, I get what you're saying. I pressume that you're in love with a girl (or were) who is taken. Music is an expression of the composer(s) and of the musician(s). It's a very careful balance, that any number of things can tip one way or the other. Just because your bassist doesn't like the lyric or even your entire band, it doesn't mean that the lyric should go into file 13. My advice, if the song as a whole expresses what you want it to, LEAVE IT!

Oh, and try some of this:
  • Talk to your bassist. Tell him that his comments get under your skin. If he's truely your friend, and comrade in music, he'll understand. If not, well then, I suppose you'll be having auditions for a new bassist.
  • Don't be afraid to stand your ground if you need to!
  • Don't make any bluffs you aren't prepared to keep.
  • Consider making revisions to the music. Different opinions produce melody and harmony, both very important parts of music.
  • If you like how it is, use it. Perhaps maybe not with the full band, but as a solo, or even you and the drummer or something like that.
  • And finally, good friends are hard to come by. Respect is even harder to earn. I wouldn't let the situation erupt so that you end up loossing a friend of yours. You never really know what's gone until it's gone.

Hi there,

What stage have you got to with some of these lyrics? If they are complete songs and your band is playing them, well stuff the bass player! Are you the singer and do you sing your own lyrics, the fish thing?

Sounds to me if you wrote it and you are singing it and the whole band as agreed to play it, you just need to have more faith in your song words and not bother so much about the bass guy. That's the good part about a band, different approaches and characters all mixing together. The hard part sometimes is holding it all together....

The fact that you asked the question here makes me wonder if you're not too sure about the lyrics yourself. If it means something to you and you get to perform it, then be strong and stick to your guns.

Yeah! Gordon.
