Combining lyrics, music, melody and vocal

This is just the hardest thing ever for me. I can write a chord progression and I can write lyrics but it's putting the words to a melody that flows nicely over the chords is what I cannot do. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I find it hard for the melody to not be so attached to the progression. What I mean by that is, my melodies are always identical with the progression.

It's hard to explain. Of all the songs I've learned to play, this isn't something I've noticed. In songs that I think are good, the vocal melody and chords aren't so identical. It's like the vocal melody stands on its own and is supported by the chords, instead of the vocals mirroring the chords so much.

Anyone even know what I'm saying or can offer some tips to break this pattern? It really frustrates me.

I understand what you mean, though I don't know if I have any good tips.
What about trying to just experiment a lot?
For example, try to improvise vocally to only one chord at a time.

I don't know if this will work for you, but it often works for me as a creative boost.
