Songwriting technique (a short post)

What are some techniques you use to write a song? As for me, if the rhythm, lyrics and melody don't suddenly explode into my head like so much TNT, I like to create a mood for myself, or rather an ambience -no, wait- an atmosphere. For instance, I live in the Pacific North West and sometimes I find it productive to just go out into the woods and lay there, forget about everything, and create what comes to mind.

Other times, I'll just go in to my room, close the blinds and write in the dark. Some times I change the lighting, sometimes I have no noise in the room, sometimes I purposely write while chaos is going on around me.

For my current album, I write in my large crawl space. It's really just an unfinished basement. Something about the light from outside just barely poking it's face in through a dusty vent while staring at the colorless brick wall with my Mac and synths at my side just causes me to bleed creativity. We all have unique ways to create our sound. What are some of yours?

If I hit a wall I'll usually just wait until my next shower. Inconveniently enough every good idea I've ever had occurred in the shower.

Oh I hate when that happens! You come up with something good but can't write it on anything because of all places of course you're in the shower!

The worst is in bed cause I'm lazy. When drifting to sleep I
Come up with the best stuff. But by morning its gone.

It's even more frustrating because you keep trying to remember but you never do. All the songs that could have been, I guess...

It's pretty simple for me. Decide the topic of the poem or song I want to write, listen to music that creates the general mood I'm trying to convey, go to town writing it(At that point I can usually just keep writing until I'm out of paper), then go back and revise it and make sure everything made sense and hit home just the way I intended it to.

Simple.

To be honest I just say things in a very musical way and just experiment with words.
