Some Taoist poetry:
People may sit till the cushion is worn through, But never quite know the real Truth: Let me tell about the ultimate Tao: It is here, enshrined within us. - Lu Tung Pin What is Tao? It is just this. It cannot be rendered into speech. If you insist on an explanation, This means exactly this. - Lu Tung Pin I burned incense, swept the earth, and waited for a poem to come... Then I laughed, and climbed the mountain, leaning on my staff. How I'd love to be a master of the blue sky's art: see how many sprigs of snow-white cloud he's brushed in so far today. - Yuan Mei A month alone behind closed doors forgotten books, remembered, clear again. Poems come, like water to the pool Welling, up and out, from perfect silence. - Yuan Mei The relic from before birth Enters one's heart one day. Be as careful as if you were holding a full vessel, Be as gentle as if you were caressing an infant. The gate of earth should be shut tight, The portals of heaven should be first opened. Wash the yellow sprouts clean, And atop the mountain is thunder shaking the earth. - Sun Bu'er Two monks sit facing, playing chess on the mountain, The bamboo shadow on the board is dark and clear. Not a person sees the bamboo's shadow, One sometimes hears the pieces being moved. - Bai Juyi And finally one of my favourites: I asked the boy beneath the pines. He said: the Master’s gone alone herb picking somewhere on the mountain, cloud-hidden, whereabouts unknown. - Chia Tao |

Caged Birds
Time and again You, too, Must long for Your old nest Deep in the mountain. - Ryokan Even if you consume as many books Even if you consume as many books As the sands of the Ganges It is not as good as really catching One verse of Zen. If you want the secret of Buddhism, Here it is: Everything is in the Heart! - Ryokan Last edited by Mr. Charlie; 01-12-2016 at 05:10 PM. |

For all these years, my certain Zen:
Neither I nor the world exist. The sutras neat within the box, My cane hooked upon the wall, I live at peace in moonlight Or, hearing water plashing on the rock, Sit up: none can purchase pleasure such as this: Spangled across the step-moss, a million coins! - Ryushu Shutaku |

Those who see worldly life as an obstacle to Dharma
see no Dharma in everyday actions. They have not yet discovered that there are no everyday actions outside of Dharma. - Dogen Hell is not punishment, it is training. - Shunryu Suzuki The monkey is reaching For the moon in the water. Until death overtakes him He'll never give up. If he'd let go the branch and Disappear in the deep pool, The whole world would shine With dazzling pureness. - Hakuin |

In my daily life there are no other chores than
Those that happen to fall into my hands. Nothing I choose, nothing reject. Nowhere is there ado, nowhere a slip. I have no other emblems of my glory than The mountains and hills without a spot of dust. My magical power and spiritual exercise consists in Carrying water and gathering firewood. - P'ang Chü-shih A lonely hut on the mountain-peak towering above a thousand others; One half is occupied by an old monk and the other by a cloud: Last night it was stormy and the cloud was blown away; After all a cloud could not equal the old man's quiet way. - Kuei-tsung Chih-chih The ten directions converging, Each learning to do nothing, This is the hall of Buddha's training; Mind's empty, all's finished. - P'ang Yün Monks sit peacefully among the trees, Ridding themselves of illusion with a calm mind. Quietly realizing enlightenment, They experience a joy that is beyond that of heaven. Laymen seek fame and profit, Or fine robes, seats, and bedding. Though the joy in getting them is only fleeting, They are untiring in their quest. Monks, however, beg for food in humble robes, Their daily actions being one with the Way. With their Wisdom-eye opened They realize the essence of the Law. Gathering all together to listen To the countless Buddhist teachings, They leave behind the world of illusion, Quietly enveloped in enlightenment's Wisdom. - Bodhisattva Nâgârjuna |
