Help! with a chord progression
 

Hey MB

So lately there's been a lot of bad stuff happening around in my life and, as usual, I'm trying to work it out in my head with songwriting.

And here the problem begins. I'm trying to write a Harrison-esque song, and I'm stuck with the last chord in the verse line.

So far the progression goes

Emaj9 – Csus2 – F#min7 – ?

and I need help to find the fourth chord for the standard verse progression. I've been thinking maybe Bmin or A7, but they don't quite fit. The chorus will be based around Amin chord bass walk (bass notes: A, G#, G, F#)


Any ideas?

For the most part chords to a song fit within the scale of the song. If a song is in C major then you can not only use the typical I IV V chords ie C F G you can add the relative minor chords A minor D minor E minor.

I haven't heard those chords played out, but just looking at them something seems amiss. I don't know if I can find the lost chord. However you have two interesting chords there. Each on their own have possibilities. Have you thought of using movable chords or using a capo?

Emaj9 you can play this as a movable chord O998OO ( open low E, ninth fret A string, ninth fret D string etc etc) Start with a chord shape an move up the neck. You don't have to know the exact chord named when making a chord progression. Just pick the ones that you like by ear.

... or you can have a progression with power chords and bar chords then just throw Emaj9 fretted as 099800 a la Peter Buck.

G min to a C sus2 can work, they share notes. You can capo at the third fret and make the fingering even easier. Throw in a couple of other chords and make a turnaround a la Oasis.

Well, these chords do feel near-dissonant when you play them, but I feel like it's the "good" kind of dissonant
They are pretty much based around Gmin harmonic or Emin harmonic
