This forum is a bit dead so I thought I'd make a thread even thought this isn't really my thang (I just like making threads)...

Copy past time: "Jesus H. Christ! Here’s a voice and a half that means the name of Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed can be uttered in the same sentence as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Sam Cook without fear of embarrassment. With his electrifying live act (”I rip a lot of pants.”), he’s on his own ‘mission from God’ to pick up the mantle of Jake and Elwood as flag bearer for the Stax/Chess/Motown legacy."

I like the old school production. May well be worth a listen.

jackhammer 06-29-2008 01:26 PM

Very good. I would like to hear Right Tracks opinion on this. This is going on the works comp ready for tomorrow!

Impressions on the first listen was that Eli "Paperboy" Reed should have stuck to his paper round.
It's not that bad though, but comparing him to the likes of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Sam Cook is stretching it a bit.
'The Satisfier' sounds like it was lifted straight from Redding's 'Hard to Handle', but the 'Doin' the Boom Boom' track was brilliant.
Loved the band and it's good to see the upright bass isn't completely dead along with that brand of R&B.
Wouldn't mind hearing more.

The comparisons are a little premature but the production is down and dirty and there are some great tunes dotted throughout.

I really like them/him. My friend has some great videos of gigs in Paris :)

goodfoot 09-02-2009 12:26 PM

seen him in glasgow,he was outstanding, and really should be compared to the great soul singers, his support band were tasty as well, the right oners, spanish i think, back to eli he sang a couple of songs without his backing band, pure southern soul magic something even james carr would've applauded

My friend in Paris did this video :)

This is also a nice one

I just discover this guy. he's more than cool.

Eli Paperboy Reed, currently the best soul singer doing the rounds at the moment..

So glad to see there's an Eli thread... sad to see it's been inactive for so long. I've followed Eli since before even his indie label release - even wrote a review of him some time ago.

Here's a clip that's a bit more recent, though not completely current.

Love this collaboration between Eli & the Pepper Pots (Spanish soul/ska band).

PhD Researcher 11-21-2013 06:10 PM

I've had the good fortune of knowing and following Eli since before his first full-length release. He is an amazing live performer! His new album is either just recently, or about to be, released on Virgin records.

CoolBec 11-29-2013 06:56 AM

Anybody catch Eli on Daryl Hall's cable show? It was really quite good.

Woopiking 02-21-2014 03:40 PM

I've seen him play live too and thought he was really good. i haven't heard his last album though
