i stand by my opinion that disco (as a mainstream style) was entirely based around commercial and financial gain. funk on the other hand, even in its most mainstream, is still rooted in music and performance. it draws as much from jazz as rock and r&b, it's not trying to be anything besides itself. |
No it was more about the two bands you used as examples. As an avid Nirvana fan I get easily offended when people compare them to trash like Nickleback, or even not-so-bad grunge/modern rock bands. It's nothing to get worked up about and I was mostly joking since I share your exact same sentiment on the disco and funk thing.

basically my original example was: nirvana (quality music, not unlike funk) vs. nickelback (crap music made for dollars, not unlike disco) there's still some comparable elements to both bands same as there are comparable elements to both styles but most people are able to spot the subtle but oh so significant differences between both. i suppose pearl jam vs. creed would have been a better example comparison but whatever, too late now hehe  |
While mainstream disco can be seriously lacking, club singers like Jocelyn Brown and Loleatta Holloway put alot of soul and creativity into the scene. It helped having fine producers as well like Greg Carmichael. most of the superior musicians and bands of the club music scene were not mainstream and do not get their just due imo...

Of course it's all down to personal taste, but relating to something that Jackhammer mentioned in another thread; There are those who feel it's safer to agree with everyone else.:) |
