Funk Metal
Epic is just Epic concerning funk rock. This should be the theme for funk metal.
Funk metal (also known as thrash funk, or punk-funk) is a subgenre of funk rock and alternative metal that fuses elements of heavy metal and funk. Cultural origins during the mid 80s. |
This is more like it :)
|
Give It Away is one of the (big) ones.

I suppose this can be called funk metal. Loved this song when it came out in the early '90s but I don't remember what the rest of the album was like. |
Living Color was an all black New York based band that a hard edged metal version of funk music. They were around in the late 80s and early 90s and reunited for a couple of years in the early 2000s. The players were excellent musicians and they built a large and loyal following.
The guitar player Vernon Reid is still a much sought after session musician and he has gigged with Ronald Shannon Jackson's experimental jazz outfit, Defunkt, Public Enemy, as well as issuing a solo album with jazz guitar wunderkind Bill Frisell |
Cult Of Personality is one of their more popular songs, I like the video as well.

Here's a 1993 performance of Ignorance Is Bliss on the David Letterman Show: |
Cult of Personality received fresh exposure in 2011 used as entrance music for professional wrestler CM Punk. They performed the song live during Punk's entrance at WrestleMania 29 of this year.
Like most bands these days, for enough money and exposure, you can more than likely hire them? :) |
Infectious Grooves is basically Suicidal Tendencies playing some amazing funky metal, just incase you didn't know. They have 4 albums, all of which I highly recommend. |
rhcp......rage against the machine... funk metal???
|
Back in 1990, the funk-metal floodgates opened. Most of the time, the names tell you everything you need to know: Psychofunkapus, Scatterbrain, Limbomaniacs, Mindfunk, Sprawl, Sweet Lizard Illtet, Moneyspank, Electric Boys, Spin Doctors. All these bands are loosely aligned to the P-funk creed originally formulated by George Clinton and Bootsy Collins (“a creative nuisance… the recognition of stupidity as a positive force”) as reactivated and reinterpreted by the Chili Peppers with their combination of zany antics, horny-like-a-mutha lyrics and elasticated funk-rock.

This is a favorite from '91.

Funk Metal did kick off a little earlier though and here is a little curio for you: The guitarist is one Tom Morello before he made it in RATM and this was 89 I think. Used to have this on Vinyl. Living Colour made their debut in 88 and Electric Boys around the same time I think. |
I always loved both genres. I think Rage does a decent job of the fusion, though it's quite hip hop influenced also.
My friends tried doing a band like this once, called themselves "Hard As Funk". Cool name but they didn't get the sound quite right. Thanks for the suggests on this to everyone. |
Hm I think Primus and Les Claypool's other groups are somewhat funk metal ( some of the songs at least) Sadly I'm unable to provide links as due to my low count of posts, since I joined today.

I never listened to Funk. But my dad loves Funk and Disco.
However, Whenever I hear a funky base guitar in one of my rock/metal/punk/ska songs or whatever, I love it xD. I really want to listen to an infectious grooves album, since I like the suicidal tendencies. Ah, okay, so I just learned it's called slap bass. It sounds ****ing awesome, I love it ^.^. |
Wow
I Didnt even know this genre existed

No one mentioned Praxis?
Bootsie Collins, Buckethead, and Brain (Primus drummer) |

The album is required to hear it. It is not as straight up as say RHCP (zzzz) or Faith No More. But it has elements in it that are far above it.
That song may not represent the album as a whole. But it is required listening. Maybe this one would have been the better introduction track: |
The master of the 8-string guitar, Tony MacAlpine.
