Who had the best vocals in Funk, Soul, R&B music?

Who do you think had (or has) the most killer vocals in any of these genres? Any decade is fine. Try to choose just one artist if you can. If you can't then who came to mind first?

That's a tough one, there are so many. I think I'll go with early James Brown.

Lou Rawls is the first to come to mind for me.

I mean I'd have to go with Etta James.
