This is 21 tracks of Phish's most accessible material. It's intended for non-phans, as in people not familiar with the band's material. Their more "poppy" songs are included, as well as songs which definitely showcase the band's sound without alienating people who aren't familiar with their music.

Many of the songs included are in .wma format, so if that's a problem, I sincerely apologize in advance.

I attempted to put the songs on the compilation in order of most accessible to least accessible, so it can be a gradual process going through the songs and attempting to "get" it.

I'll probably get around to making a volume 2, showcasing what are just some of their absolute best songs.

nice!^ Phish is awesome, hopefully a good number of people will check this out

Good call...I started with some of their studio albums but quickly realized the real gold is in their live stuff. I only listen to live Phish these days. Same goes for most jam bands, really.

It's about time we get someone to represent the jam band side of contemporary prog. It's one of the most underrepresented styles on the forum. Nice comp. I'll check it out.

Their live music is definitely where it's at. The majority of my hard drive is (in all honesty) filled with live shows.

Tis' true, but at the same time, I can listen to Junta and Lawn Boy forever.

Antonio 09-19-2010 08:05 PM

^Junta is made of God and win, after all :D

ThePhanastasio 09-19-2010 08:18 PM

I really love Junta too, but I felt like those tracks were a little overwhelming for the overall mix. There will be some in volume 2 for sure!

I may just be wary about Junta because I was "introducing" a friend to the music of Phish, and the live version of "Icculus" came on, and I do believe it scared him. Near the beginning of the song, his commentary was, "Wh...what is Red Rocks? And why...wait, is Trey screaming about being The Edge?!" As can be imagined, the rest of the song only troubled him further.

Beginner's Guide to Avant-Garde Metal

http://imgsrc.hubblesite.org/hu/db/i...4-27-a-web.jpg
(Don't ask why I chose a picture of the Cateye Nebula to represent Avant-Garde Metal)

When it comes to avant-garde music in general it becomes very hard to find an accurate description of what it's suppose to sound like because its so varied. I've always looked at it as music "above and beyond status quo of other metal styles" be it with their instrumentation, lyrics, arrangement, or just the band in question's vast departure from what they were doing before. I don't think any band is labeled avant-garde initially, it comes with time and maturity, because nearly every band in this mix began as a typical black metal/ death metal/ whatevermetal band, but grew as the years went on.

This is a mix of 15 tracks where I've tried to leave out some of the more popular ones in favor of bands who go under the radar of most folks. It's a longer playlist so set aside the time to really listen to it, preferably with headphones. If anybody is interested in any particular artist, just let me know and I'll see what I can do about hooking you up with a full album.

^^This is too tempting. I think I'm gonna let go of my metal guard and download this. I'll see how it goes from there. Thanks LoathsomePete.
