Bi Monthly Comp : November 2009 - Horror

http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/76/horrorb.jpg

Tracklist
  1. The Residents - Lizard Lady
  2. Goblin - Suspiria
  3. Scott Walker - The Escape
  4. Shinjuku Thief - The Darkened Psalm
  5. MRR-ADM - 013
  6. 1000 Funerals - Portrait Of A Dream
  7. Thrice - The Lion and the Wolf
  8. The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble - The Nothing Changes
  9. David Lynch & John Neff - City Of Dreams
  10. The Fall - Spectre Vs Rector
  11. John Harrison - The Dead Suite

So here's november's bi-monthly, 11 tracks of suspenseful horror music that should hopefully give associations to darkness, fear, murder, insanity and other subjects that, while often uncomfortable, still holds fascination for so many of us.

I've yet to actually sit down and take it all in, but I'll do so and comment on it soon. From what I've heard so far, there's a lot of ambient sounds on this one so I think this is a good one to put on while you're for example reading a book - or anything else that you wanna add a touch of creepyness to.

Get it!

Once again, some of the obvious stuff is left out because everyone avoids it...should have just contributed without putting so much thought into it. :usehead:

I too put a little too much thought into what I wanted to submit then in the end didn't send anything. I'll check this out but the file is temporarily unavailable. I'll be in for the next one, night-driving, no?

what the heck, tore?

music_phantom13 11-17-2009 03:16 PM

I wanted to put in The Torture Never Stops but I didn't make it :( You should add it to the end of the comp after you dl it.

I'll guess.

The Residents - Anteater
The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble - Zarko
1000 Funerals - Canwll
Goblin - Jackhammer

storymilo 11-17-2009 03:36 PM

Bulldog- Scott Walker

And if I'm wrong, I won't guess any more, promise! I've learned my lesson from last time...

Nope, you got'em both right!

About the thinking too much thing, I really do think people should just put whatever they like in some way - whether they think it's particularly spooky, funny or awesome - and not worry too much about who plays the music or if it's eclectic enough or whatever other mind**** can mess up with one's decision. It's a mix album, not a fashion show, and famous, predictable artists occasionally make nice or suitable music too.

edit :

Stone Birds, I was just a bit quick with posting the link. Seems megaupload wanted to process the file a little or do a security check or something. The file works fine now.

sidewinder 11-17-2009 05:20 PM

I was just trying to find something in my collection other than Misfits, which came to mind immediately when the theme was announced, and not a single track was submitted!

jackhammer 11-17-2009 05:42 PM

I did send you my original choice tore after having trouble with the original upload and resorting to an old link from my account.

Anyhoo:

Zarko The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble
NumberNineDream David Lynch & John Neff
Anteater Suspiria

Sorry mate! Are you sure you sent me that message though? The only one I can find in my inbox regarding the horror comp is from the 11th and has the song included in the comp.

Anyways, good guesses.

NumberNine and Anteater are busted! :)

storymilo 11-17-2009 06:11 PM

Tore the link isn't working for me. It says that it is "temporarily unavailable."

Dang darnit .. It worked before :(

Here's a new link, maybe that will work better!

I'll add it to the OP.

Heh, to be honest I saw black metal and thought hmm... Canwll? To be honest I haven't the slightest idea what else you listen to

Zarko The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble
NumberNineDream David Lynch & John Neff
Anteater Suspiria

That was obvious with all last week's debate on David Lynch and Sound Design :D
When you posted the youtube link of the Bluebob album, all I could think of was how obvious my Horror track has become [still a great track nonetheless =P].

Pretty much trance, hardstyle, and electro. Alternative and 90s music as well. Black Metal is usually the only thing I post when I download it cause all the electronic stuff usually comes out song by song and not full albums.

music_phantom13 11-18-2009 08:35 AM

Ah gotcha, thought I'd seen you in the electronica area. Thought it would have been pretty easy to guess your song even knowing that, because no one posted anything that really fits into any of those genres

Very true

I quite like the comp! Great stuff :baseball:

Zarko 11-18-2009 07:48 PM

The interesting thing is we had more than 11 people vote for Horror IIRC but only 11 submitted songs :p:

Probably one of the better compilations we have had IMHO.

Bulldog 11-19-2009 08:29 AM

Damn, I totally forgot about this comp. Found out literally before I knew it as well - I should stop being so predictable with these things :D

Downloading now...

Stone Birds 11-19-2009 03:40 PM

Tore - MRR-ADM - 013
LoathsomePete - Thrice - The Lion and the Wolf

Correctomundo!

These threads used to be stickied, but the result was a general forum clogged with comp stickies so .. we unstickied them. Possibly, the underused Soundtracks forum will be turned into a soundtracks & compilations forum where people can discuss albums like "That '70s" and so on and we can shove all our user comp threads in there too.

The desember theme will be Night-Driving and then we'll do another with christmas songs, just for fun. :)

Oh well, thought I may as well give it a try considering these threads generally die in the arse if they aren't stickied.

Schizotypic 11-29-2009 09:23 AM

Great looking compilation, I usually don't download these but I'll give this one a go- it looks so interesting! Can't wait to hear it, maybe I'll even participate in next month's.

^I think this too, there was no reply on it.

Other guesses:

Remedy >> MRR ADM (cz nothing ID3ed in that thing)
Stone Birds >> Thrice
Zarko >> Shinjuku Thief
Tore >> The Residents

Edit: Any comments on the songs for now (other than the comp in general) ?

Great job! All four guesses are correct :) Considering submissivewife busted Jackhammer on the previous page, there's only one song left which will have to belong to LoathsomePete, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble's The Nothing Changes. Grats on guessing everyone :)

I went with The Residents' Lizard Lady basically to add a little variety to the comp as it had a lot of ambient tracks.

Lizard Lady is one of my absolute favourite Residents songs and one of the first I heard from them some 10 years ago now. Before it was so familiar to me, I thought it was quite eerie and I know for a fact that girlfriends tend to hate it. The song is almost funny, but never quite - ending up more in creepy land, something The Residents are quite good at.

Seems like I had all the fun to myself. Thought of finishing it off tho, before December's comp.

Anyway, loved that Lizard Lady track. One of the fun songs on that comp, while preserving its eeriness.
Well the comp is all in all good, enjoyed every track, and there was some kind of gloomy creepiness surrounding it (which is definitely good).
Other tracks I liked would be, Spectre Vs Rector, The Dead Suite, The Nothing Changes and The Darkened Psalm.
There are many new bands that I'll certainly check out.

Zarko 12-06-2009 07:49 PM

Hey, I already guessed Pete :p:

nah gj #s, good to finally get this one over with. I think people like them stickied.

Yep, now it is - in our newish forum! :D

The reason it was unstickied was there were so many compilation threads stickied in the general music forum. Now Yac's turned the little used soundtracks forum into a soundtracks & compilations forum, so anything that has to do with compilations will be done here in the future.

CanwllCorfe 12-17-2009 07:29 PM

Thats probably what makes the themes more interesting - Interpretation of the songs on a personal level. ie my submission to the cyberpunk compilation.

CanwllCorfe 12-17-2009 07:41 PM

Yeah that's true. Horror is right up my alley so I needed to contribute something.
