Upcoming Bi-Monthly Themed Comp : 1001 Nights!

February Bi-Monthly Upcoming Theme Is : 1001 Nights!

Send up to two tracks to : toretorden

Deadline : 15th of March

In case you don't know, One Thousand and One Nights is a collection of middle eastern and south asian stories. It's more famous stories include Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp, Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves and The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor. The stories have their roots in ancient and medieval Arabic, Persian, Indian, Egyptian and Mesopotamian folklore and literature. While these may serve as inspiration, I will accept anything that sounds like it's sufficiently inspired by the traditional sounds from these areas and cultures. In other words, if you want to send some Indian sounding music, that's fine. If you want to send some egyptian or iranian inspired music, you can send that as well. The keyword is traditional and folk(lore) sounding. You can send in traditional/folk songs, rock songs, metal, trance, whatever - as long as it sounds middle eastern / indian inspired.

Here's some stuff to get your creative juices flowing.

Just thought of something good for this. Might be a bit obvious coming from me though :p:

PM on the way...

Guybrush 03-06-2010 07:37 AM

I have quite a lot that I think should fit in this comp, so it's not a hard one for me. Might get a bit predictable here as well, though. :p:

NumberNineDream 03-06-2010 07:47 AM

I demand the inclusion of Lebanon in the aforementioned countries !!
lol kidding...
Anyway, looking forward to that one. I'll be researching my un-digitized library for now, as I went through a very deep Arabian Nights phase 10 years ago.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess, Amorphous Androgynous is Bulldog's.

Stone Birds 03-06-2010 08:21 AM

if any of you know me well enough mine won't be a hard guess

Okay, I've recieved some submissions that I'm having a hard time seeing how really fit the theme. I accept that it's a comp where it's ultimately up to the contributors and what they think of when they read the theme description and not necessarily what I think of. Because of this, I will include them unless I'm asked to change the tracks.

Still, I thought I'd post some additional guidance and then people can do with it as they please. When I think of music which is "inspired" by 1001 Nights stories/culture/areas, I think of something like this :

This is of course a metal song and it can be any genre and it doesn't need to have this level of influence, but .. perhaps it gives some people some idea on what they could submit. ;)

edit :

Here's another example song from a totally different genre :

Oh yeah, baby!

I know it's Spanish but it sounds a little Arabian... Kind of... Good enough...

Guybrush 03-07-2010 03:15 AM

Remember that each example you post here is a song spent that you might not wanna submit to the comp itself (although others might I guess, could be an interesting "tactic") as we generally have a little game where we try to guess who submitted what. :)

As we did last time, I'll set up a poll to figure out which song was the favourite or fit the comp best.

Regardless of time, I want at least 10 submissions before I post this comp. Remember that I accept two from each of you! If there are few contributions, I might also raise the bar and allow more.

Ahh yes! I thought I'd never have something to send but I do! As per usual, it will be on the Electronic side of things.

Extremely tough submission considering it is such a niche sound. Will try to find something though. Don't be surprised if I dont
