[RELEASE] March Themed Comp : 1001 Nights!

Here's the monthly bi-monthly comp! The theme this time was 1001 Nights, music inspired by the traditional sounds of middle east and south asia, such as old Persia (Iran) and India. At first I was a little worried that people wouldn't find music to fit the theme, but the last couple of days before the deadline, the size of the comp almost doubled to a sizeable 18 tracks! I was also initially a bit worried that people wouldn't be able to connect with the theme, but those fears were unfounded as the comp has plenty of music which is thematically brilliant. I've set up a poll so we can find out just which track suits the comp the best. Underneath, you find the list of contributors. I'll add tracks under their usernames as their songs are found out.

I like much of what I've heard so far. Although it's not the first time, I think it's fun to have a theme which stands out a bit from the sounds you normally hear. I'm gonna have another more thorough listen-through before I vote in the poll, though.
By the way, regarding tags, I always try to tag the comps properly. I realize different programs use different tags, though. The date tag is inconsistent across the album because I use an extra tag called "release date" which foobar sorts by rather than date if it is present. I also noticed after upping it that my old winamp reads artist differently on one of the tracks and couldn't find any tags on another song. How does it look in your end? Is it a mess? |
Some quick impressions so far :
Dead Can Dance - Indus Fits the comp perfectly, just the kind of stuff that should be on this thing. It sounds good and it's a mysterious opener. On the downside, it is also a bit slow and long. Thievery Corporation - The Richest Man In Babylon Smooth! Ups the tempo a little, but we're still chillin'. Nice track. Secret Chiefs 3 - Ship of Fools (Stone of Exile) Quirky, strange, almost comical instrumental. Makes me think of caves with hidden treasure troves consisting of golden lamps and jewels :p: At least before it gets it's mmpf on towards the end. I like. Secret Chiefs 3 - Horsemen of the Invisible Fitting title. Unlike the predecessor, the trance-y nature of this one grates the nerves just a little, though. Fitting and the change of pace is welcome, but towards the end, I was looking forward to the next track. Bel Canto - Le Temps Degage Slow to get started, but the mysterious sounds fit the comp perfectly. When it finally gets properly started about halfway in, it sounds good! Dick Dale - The Victor It's like a mix of 1001 Nights and old western movies. Sounds quite a lot like Misirlou in parts. Cool track and fun to see the King of Surf Guitar in the comp! The Future Sound of London - Papua New Guinea Wow, listening to this takes me back. I remember this song well from back in the 90s, I loved it then. It's still a good song. Not a song I would have thought of adding (beware, I could be trying to throw you guessers off), but it fits the comp. :) Ozric Tentacles - Mysticum Arabicola A bit repetitive, but hey - it's space rock, right? Everything else I like, it is a good track. It also fits the comp nicely. Ravi Shankar - Dadra Brilliant, a sitar track! I can't say I love it, 10+ minutes of trancy sitar plucking is just a bit much, but I don't have much sitar music so it's a welcome addition to the library. I'll have to have a closer look at Mr. Shankar and his stuff. Guy Manoukian - Al Urdun Rather sophisticated for a dance track, there's a lot going on - different little themes and so on. Brilliant! :) |

Great comp, as I expected. My favourite by far.
My comments: Indus - Dead Can Dance Well, as I'm familiar with Dead Can Dead, I wasn't much surprised that I found this track to my liking. Plus, I do have the album, which I do love. The richest man in Babylon - Thievery Corporation Really liked it, even though it doesn't have a thing to do with the theme. Both Secret Chiefs 3 tracks I really liked them. The Middle Eastern music is flagrant in both. Though in the first it seemed like they took all Middle Eastern percussion styles, and put them all together. The second one had something new added to the whole folkloric music. I liked what they did with it. Le temps dégagé - Bel Canto It was nice, but nothing I haven't heard before. It was kind of similar to the music of Natasha Atlas, specially her take of "Mon amie la rose", which now thinking about it, I should've sent in. Another song that's in this style, would be Tina Arina's "Je m'appelle Bagdad". I can't say I didn't like it, I've always been fond of this kind of music. Would love to find out more of Bel Canto's material. The Victor - **** Dale I loved how subtle the whole middle eastern vibe is all along. Very different from the Secret chiefs 3's way of plunging in this style of music. With **** Dale, the guitars were playing the drum's parts, the percussions doing what the strings would've been doing, etc ... Very much refreshing. Papa New Guinea - The Future Sound of London As I said in the previous 1001 Nights thread, I think that's Bulldog's. Mysticum Arabicola - Ozric Tentacles Loved it. Nothing surprising, as I adore the Ozric Tentacles, and being very much Middle Eastern driven, was always a characteristic I found in their music. I shall now purchase Erpland it seems. Dadra - Ravi Shankar Well it is Ravi Shankar, I don't think I can add anything to describe how great he is. Al Urdun - Guy Manoukian Kind of rejuvenating. Loved the whole mix of everything, that changes every once in a while so you won't get bored with any of the melodies played. But I really think the cheesy beat at the beginning should've been removed. Guvinda - Kula Shaker Another band I find to my liking. As I don't have that specific album, I think I should purchase that one too. However, I don't think that song has much to do in that comp, even though I enjoyed it thoroughly. Eco'ya donder Beni - Selda Bagcan That one has to be +81's as he did send me this album in one of the weekly trades. I wonder why I gave him such a hard time about it then. I must've been pissed off when I wrote that review. Anywho, I really liked it. Though I much prefer Dam Üstüne Çul Serer from that album, this one is pretty good too. It's a shame though, having this song end with a fade. True bummer. Mouth on Fire - Yoko Kanno Very similar to the pop scene we had in the 90s, when all the local artists were obsessed with the Latino twist on the Oriental music. Very refreshing. Jerusalem - Mirah Just another pop song, I felt. Nothing exotic in this one, other than the title being literally "Jerusalem". Much of a bummer, having the music not go well with the title, or theme of the song. Révélations mineurs - Mouzanar What I like best in this one, is the arrangement. With the shy Anoun that just pops up from time to time, and the Darbuka that starts strongly at the beginning, and fades to the background for the rest of the song, and just having the violas play all through the song. Very soothing tune, that's not very stretched in length which also plays to its benefits. Taqasim For Omar - Sir Richard Bishop Well there's nothing new with taqasims, which is the Arabic word for scale. However, I always enjoy listening to it. It's kind of an art based on improvisation, going from a scale to another, trying to find the exit. I guess what's different in that one, is just the instrument, being a guitar, and not the classic Oud. Concierto De Aranjuez - Miles Davis Well it's a "spanish" take, on one of the most popular classical pieces. I don't know what it's doing here lol. But I do love it, and here's the Arabic adaptation of it: Miskeen - Althawra Well it's a song talking about the Palestinian misery. Well the crying Nay at the beginning, accompanying the cries of the Palestinian child was pretty good, but then we're back to the growling, something I hear in all the underground Arabic bands. And sadly always the same rhythm and the same style. Usually they break it with some keyboard playing a very middle eastern melody, backing the oriental rhythms of the drums. This one was like the standard of all Arabic hardcore metal compositions. Like it should start like this, then some growling, some drums playing what usually the darbuka does, then we'll get with the electric strings with something smoother. I would've added to the comp this thing, if I was searching for a song to fill the spot for an oriental metal track: .... So I can't find the track anywhere, now that "Void" has disbanded. Here's a sample uploaded on youtube by one of this band's biggest groupies (He's kind of screwing everything up, and pretty badly... so don't expect to listen to much, I'm just giving an idea) : So this is it for now. |
