I think what really killed our domestic leagues was british television. Before most people could recieve the BBC the only way see a match was to support your local team, which is why there were fairly big attendances at league of Ireland games up the the end of the 70's. And then the arrival of Sky Sports and the Premiership made English football even more accessible and killed it off even more.

Only in times of war!

i get to support my local team for free, im in the marching band.

ThePhanastasio 10-17-2010 08:16 PM

The closest thing to a local team I have is Marshall University's athletics teams. They're pretty heinous, to say the least.

I will admit that I saw three Marshall football games last season, front row, just off the 50 yard line as my friend is a huge Marshall fan and has season tickets. They were pretty horrible last year, but this year is far, far worse.

I've not been able to bring myself to see any of their games this year.

I live near the Philadelphia area and I don't support any Philly teams... or Pittsburgh teams for that matter. I root for Penn State but I am not a diehard. My fanhood is all over the place for different reasons. I'm a diehard Mets fan and also root for the Atlanta Falcons and Maryland in college basketball

Howard the Duck 10-31-2011 06:25 AM

i used to support the Kuala Lumpur soccer team

but they were all imports from other states and didn't really gel as a team

Zaqarbal 10-31-2011 11:40 AM

^ Are there female supporters there?

It could be an incentive.... I mean, in case you don't like the other 22 at the field.

0.76 miles L2 AFC Wimbledon
5.98 miles L1 Brentford Football & Sports Club
6.05 miles PR Fulham Football Club
7.19 miles PR Chelsea Football Club
8.00 miles PR Queens Park Rangers Football and Athletic Club
9.14 miles CH Crystal Palace Football Club
12.16 miles CH Millwall Football Club
13.71 miles PR Arsenal Football Club
15.54 miles L1 Charlton Athletic Football Club
16.49 miles L1 Leyton Orient Football Club

13.71 miles away from my team, not bad. I was actually born in North London too. SO glad I'm not closer to Tottenham than I am Arsenal.

I thought I did until I googled it, apparantly Motherwell FC are closer than Hamilton Accies. I like both equally, I just go see Accies play more cos my mate plays for them :).

I grew up in a San Francisco Giants baseball house, and I've always been fairly disinterested. So technically no, but I guess on some levels I like them more than any other team. I certainly don't 'root' for them or watch their games.
Growing up it was Giants baseball or bust in my family. And it still is, but I don't live with family anymore so it doesn't bother me anymore. I could hold a conversation about baseball if I had to, but I'd rather not. I enjoy going to the games, but I usually don't watch them. Just check the score and inning to see how long I got hanging out at the park. I don't remember the older stadium at Candlestick, besides that it was ugly and cold.

I'm not a fan of being a fan. I don't like joining the mob of people hell-bent on cheering on their colors. It doesn't matter who's on the team. In 15 years time not a single member of the team will likely still be there, and so on, so I don't really understand that. I don't understand what's so enthralling about sports that it becomes a sort of religion. I've been around sports fans all my life and I really don't see what they get out of it. Win or lose, I'm indifferent. A loss for them is a quiet night and a win for them and they're all in a good mood. Isn't that really unhealthy and stupid?

I recently came up to Eugene, Oregon, and all the businesses have "Go Ducks!" in the windows, everyone's got green and yellow paraphenalia on them or their vehicles. The cabs are painted green and yellow. I was thinking to myself "This town is really nice, I like the weather, but this whole college football thing baffles me". I mean, seriously, this isn't even NFL, this is the local college. What's so damn interesting about watching these children (18-23 years old I assume) play? Why do they sell more seats at this college game than the Giants do tickets at a playoff game? I guess that's the popularity of baseball isn't it?

Sports confuse me.

I love the accies more than life itself, but I live in England now. Haven't been there for months :(

Goofle 12-05-2011 05:28 PM

No.

Salami 12-06-2011 09:26 AM

To some people, Arsenal isn't that far away from Bolton. Apparently, LA isn't that far from Vancouver.

Smerch 12-21-2011 04:12 AM

I used to but now i live about 10,500 miles away from The City Ground.

Howard the Duck 12-21-2011 04:59 AM

i do support the Malaysian badminton team and the local squash darling - Nicole David

it's just that I ain't arsed to watch any of their games, i'd rather watch water evaporate

James 12-21-2011 05:03 AM

Well actually The City Ground is the home of Nottingham Forest, not Man City. I probably should have specified, we're not quite as well known as we used to be :(.

But yeah there are definitely a lot of United supporters down here *cough* glory supporters *cough*, not so many Forest fans but it's always good when you do meet one. When ashes time* comes around you do run into a lot more Forest fans in the city though.

*If you didn't know, the ashes is a series of cricket matches between England and Australia that happens every 2 years, hence there being more forest fans. I hope that didn't sound too condescending haha.

Howard the Duck 12-21-2011 07:10 AM

people here only support Man U or Liverpool

Yes, just about every English person knows the Ashes! The only time I ever visited Australia was to see us loose a few years ago,

Not as keen on cricket, but very good sport to socialise.

In 2005? That was the first time i visited Australia as well. Only came for the last 2 tests though so we'd already lost by then. Was still an amazing experience, not to mention the English fans still being louder than the Aussies despite losing 5-0.

Aren't you thinking of the 2002/3 one?

Mind you, the 2005 one was the best one I've ever seen. Didn't go to the games that time, but that was an incredibly exciting series.

I believe Gordon Brown pretends to!

I'm well annoyed at Hamilton this year. They've sank to a miserable 6th in the first division, below Falkirk!

Naa, Brownies a Raith fan. To be fair to the lad, he does get down to Starks Park occasionally.

First divisions a tough league though, I'd go as far as saying possibly the hardest league to predict in the UK, Cowden couldn't stick it last year, but I reckon we'll be having another crack next season.

I'll put a tenner on us swapping leagues, huh?

Listening to Paolo Nutini at the moment, by the way.

14232949 12-27-2011 08:14 PM

Ahhh...I don't know about that, I'd say Ayr are probably most likely to drop down.
The Accies should be safe.

Ah Paolo, what a man. These Streets or Sunny Side Up?

FatOwls1711 01-16-2012 11:47 AM

I can't not support my local club. I would have been disowned if I didn't support Sheffield Wednesday... But saying that, I wouldn't ever want to support anyone else!

Euronomus 01-25-2012 01:27 PM

I'll always love my Colts no matter what... ALWAYS.... think I'm gonna go curl up into a fetal position and cry myself to sleep now.

Being from San Diego, I was a Charger fan since I can remember, but they've just made me hate American football in general the past couple of seasons. Now living in Tijuana, Mexico for the time being, this past year has been a HUGE improvement for the city on account of the local Xolos team winning the league. It's a funny thing how everyone jumps on the local team, going from dirt cheap tickets to try to fill up a quarter of the stadium, to selling out with ticket prices being raised 60%. Everyone laughed when I said "they'll be champs this year"

musicsbiggestfan 02-14-2013 12:43 AM

For the sports here yes though my favorite USA teams in hockey, american football, and college are in my state. Though my favorite world football team doesn't play near me.

Paul Smeenus 02-17-2013 12:56 AM

Living in Seattle since 1998, the only local team I support is the Mariners.

I'm a Portland native, my NBA team is my Trail Blazers. Between the M's and the Rip City 5, this has been a painful existence (except for the 1977 Bill Walton led NBA Championship)

I grew up rooting for the 49ers in the early '70's when the likes of John Brodie & Gene Washington would lose in heartbreaking fashion to the Roger Staubach/Bob Lilly/Duane Thomas Cowboys in the playoffs. I've been with 'em ever since, although it was hard not to get excited about the Seahawks season. I would've rooted for the Hawks against anybody but the 49ers.

I've always been a Canucks fan ever since they joined the NHL (They were in the WHL along with the Portland Buckaroos when I was a kid, the were so dominant that they just put them in the NHL as-is in 1970). I will always be a Canucks fan until or unless either Portland or Seattle gets an NHL team.

College, all I gotta say is......
