My take is the absolute opposite. Rooney stays because he never wanted to leave! The way I see the whole affair...it started after Rooney said he wanted to sign for life just before going to the world cup. I reckon his agent told him he was a fool for appearing so eager and on his return should let them know that he won't be signing a new contract. That way he'd be in a stronger position to renegotiate a better contract. When he repeated the stance a couple of weeks ago Ferguson decided to call his bluff and with a stroke of genius put it in the public domain (something Ferguson never does btw), probably suspecting that the agent was behind the whole thing. An even bigger mistake was the press release 2 hours before the Euro game. The statement was clearly written by his agent because it contained words with more than two syllables! I doubt either of them expected such a public backlash from all quarters. If you ask me, Rooney and his agent blew it big time. End result...Rooney gets the contract he was probably going to get anyway. Ferguson shows again that he's not to be messed with. Rooney would be well advised to sack his agent and write a handwritten apology to all concerned in his best joined up writing, along with a promise to make it up with improved performances on the pitch. He's going to look a bit silly if he doesn't out perform his team mates after what was insinuated on Wednesday. And I don't think Ferguson will accept anything less. |

I imagine they both thought the details would be kept out of the public eye. Until of course, Ferguson played his cards. I'm in no doubt that Ferguson would have gotten rid of Rooney...had he believed that was how Rooney really felt about the club and the comments that were made were truly and entirely his own genuine thoughts. There was only one other player he's gone this far for and that was Cantona. The rest were shown the door in no uncertain terms. As for Rooney being bigger than the club. For me this isn't even an issue. Ferguson left the door open for Rooney and Rooney chose to walk back through it. I doubt he got a better deal than the one he would have got had he bargained in the usual way. The deal he got will be fitting for a player considered to be the best English footballer in the country. A deal he was always going to get. I think his agent had bigger ideas knowing that there were certain others, paying over inflated wages to players of less ability, not to far away. What convinces me of all this? Well, when you threaten to leave a job as a ruse for upping your wages, you'd better have somewhere to go. And surprise, surprise...there wasn't! Ferguson knew... Mourinho knew. |
He's done a great job, as an agent, because he's got Rooney a 5 year deal and doubled his wages.
People are saying Fergie did a "masterstroke" But I just think it's a face saving thing from the fans, he sounded genuinely upset and he wanted to keep the player. Rooney may have been advised to do certain things, but I think Rooney wanted the wage packet. And I don't think he cared where he got it. Why would he be advised to say the club lacked ambition? I believe he wanted more money, and he dressed up that fact by saying he wanted to go for football reasons - ambition. But we'll never know for sure. I just hope Fergie, has gone that extra mile for him and it will pay off. I wonder if he's been promised signings. I bet they told him they were signing a 35m pound striker and the thick twat hasn't worked it out yet :laughing: |
