Well it didn't come home and I think outside of England, absolutely nobody wanted it to "come home". I'm not a huge fan of Italy or Italians but even I was hoping they win. The semis and the aftermath of the final confirmed a growing European dislike of England and the English. I've long believed that the worst Euro trash comes from England, based on personal experience, and this Euro has done nothing to disprove that. Disgraceful. :/

Unfortunately it seems that a small section of English so-called fans are there to specifically cause trouble and sow unrest. Organisations like Combat 18 have long been documented as going to matches purely for the opportunity to set fans against each other and cause violence. It has to be said that the majority of English football fans are law-abiding and peaceful, and there to enjoy the footy.

However...

With feelings running high, and a deservedly superb performance at the Euros, which nobody can take from them - they did not squeeze through on one-nils and jammy penalties or other decisions, or by beating **** teams - whether England won or not I'm afraid you would have had this reaction, either in drunken euphoria (a bad country to visit, I'm told, and they don't like the English there) or bad-tempered lack of sportsmanship, ie bad losers.

Everyone connected with football in England can feel shame and anger at the racial slurs against the players who missed penalties, the violence that attended the final and the overall behaviour of, again, a small section of the crowd. Italy and England were well-matched and it could have gone either way, but in the end England did not take their chances after the first goal and though Pickford was a hero, the Italians were just better at pens than the English were. Why Southgate allowed two players who had been only on the field a short time to take penalties and left out older, more seasoned players I don't know, but that was his decision and it cost him dear. England fans need to accept that, but truly, down through history the English have never learned to lose gracefully, and they probably never will.

I bet English rags the next morning carried the kind of headlines like WE WUZ ROBBED and various Italian slurs to put down the worthy winners, as well as denigrating the English team. As you say, disgraceful, but for the majority of the fans and followers, and the team, and football in general, I think everyone would agree with that assessment and denounce the violence and racism. Nobody wants to see that in football. Or anywhere.

The real European sport is debating which is the worst country in Europe.

The highlight of the tournament for me
