For bass players!

I've been playing around lately with different sounds for my bass. I've used the sans amp overdrive and even a clean chorus sound. but recently I was listening to AFI cover of NIN's Head like a hole. I love that sound. So far, I haven't been able to get it. I've tried the overdrive with treble turndown slightly, mids almost off and vise versa. But I've left the lows up for the bassy sound.

Anyone have any clue? :band:

turn down the lows. it seems odd and counter productive but that's what i find dries out the sound the most.

Yup.
Backing off on the low frequencies helps the highs stand out more clearly.
You can also get pretty good results by cloning the bass after it's recorded and low passing one copy at around 80hz and changing the interleave to mono, then high passing the other clone with no lows and putting FX there, even a bit of chorus, etc.
Keeps your low end tight and controlled, dialed right up the middle, and your high end carrying the rest.
