Default Sound Forge MIDI Help

Hi,

When I go to View --> Keyboard, I get a virtual keyboard, but I don't know how to output the notes to a song. When I try to set the MIDI input device in the preferences, there is no device listed. Is there any way to output the notes to a file? I've done it in Audition, but I don't like the keyboard in that program.

Thanks for any help,

Rich

Is the virtual keyboard a MIDI editor, or an actual instrument?

If it's an instrument, then your input device needs to be controlled with a MIDI editor or a hardware MIDI keyboard. I'm assuming you don't have a hardware MIDI keyboard, so you'll need a MIDI editor, which is a simple keyboard-like controller program that allows you to plot notes that control your instrument.

If it's a MIDI editor and not an instrument, then you need to route your MIDI output to an instrument. The input doesn't need to be set in this scenario, or should be in "omni" mode, which basically uses your soundcard's MIDI synth for the production of note data. (if there's no specific setting for "omni", then it is most likely defaulted anyway, in which case you don't have to worry about it.)

Thanks for the reply. Here is a screen shot of the keyboard:

I have also noticed an option to set the MIDI time code:

But when I choose any of time code options it says, "The MIDI input device for Synchronization and Triggering is set to (None). Use the MIDI/Sync page in the Preferences dialog to set the MIDI input device." And when I go there, I don't see an input device, as you can see from this screen shot:

I just had a look at the manual for 9.0 (not sure if that's the version you have, but it looks appropriate) and there's a full run-down on setting up the MIDI keyboard in chapter 195.

Download it here:
Sony Creative Software - Download: Sound Forge 9.0 Manual

That should get you sorted.
