Default Live vocal FX (using guitar pedals)

I'm wanting to incorperate some of my guitar pedal into my vocal sound, namely delay and reverb.
I want to be able to control the effects from the stage.

I was thinking of using a cheapish compact mixer and using the fx send use the effects, then the mixer out into a DI to the main desk.

Has anyone ever done anything like that before? If so, how did it work out.

Also, I know that with using a delay and reverb from the stage and not the main desk means everything coming through front of house is going to come through the monitors and that can cause feeedback problems, but I was thinking a noise gate would sort this out, or am I being really naive?
