Good pair of headphones?
 

Title says it all. I'm looking for a pair of nice quality headphones that I can use for both my ipod and laptop. Most of mine in the past were meh quality (Skullcandy, Sony and Panasonic was what I used). Keep in mind I listen to music every day in some form so they need to be able to last for quite a while. Price is not a issue and I live in Canada so Canadian stores are best, but is open to US stores as well. Thanks!

Allright, altought I might cause some trouble here but this is my experience (and the one from most serious audiofreaks):
Avoid sennheiser, Bose and Skullcandy.
Sennheiser might be nice in the upper (more than 200 bucks) regions, but below that it's safer to go for a nice Philips or AKG. Beyerdynamic made a lot of good stuff too and even grado sells very nice headphones for about 100 bucks.
I mysef love the AKG K141 by the way.
What budget are you looking in?

The Beyer DT990 or 770 are nice headphones to wear all day, but they are a bit big and expensive.

Below the 70 bucks mark Philips really has some nice headphones to offer.
Even their 15 bucks SHP-2000 is in my opinion better than any skullcandy or bose and also better than most sub $100 sennheisers.
It's probably better than any brand up to 40 bucks.

Bose seems to make decent headphones but they are pricey. Never owned one, though, but sampling at stores, you put them on and it seems the entire world around is locked away.

I can vouch for these headphones, because I've listened to music through them before. My buddy is a sound engineer, and got a tattoo of headphones on his upper arm. He chose this model as the base for his tattoo, sent a picture of it in to AKG, and they sent him these headphones for free.

He was using mid-price range Sennheisers, but these really do have a better sound, in my opinion.

For what it's worth, he also says that Bose are complete crap, as he used those in one of his sound classes, and eventually just brought his own AKGs in because the Bose bothered him.

And anyone should know Skull Candy are crap.

Well I'm not allowed to say 'no, they don't', as apparently it's always a question of taste.
But according to my (pretty well trained) ears and (720 keystroks a minute, so pretty well trained too :D) fingers they sound like cheap ass headphones and feel even cheaper. You just pay for the brand, just like with their speakers. I would avoid bose at all cost.
If you want to know what I'm talking about; Take a set of Bose 201's (their best selling bookshelf speaker) and put them on top of eachother in a normal way. Not very soft, but definitely not very rough. The bottom one will fall apart. I am not kidding ;). That's Bose Quality.
And again: I am not kidding. This is a well known fact I laughed about until I sold a set of 201's and put them on top of eachother in the box I wanted to ship them in...

That's just brilliant.
I have the first model (1978), the 'cardan'. They cost about 125 dollars new, now and they are absolutely brilliant. Really really very good. Better than the (way more expensive) Beyerdynamic DT990's which I used before the AKG's. The Beyers were 2 dollars at a thrift store by the way. Yeah, I have a thing with buying microphones and headphones waaaay too cheap.

The sennheisers are, in my opinion, not very detailed, lack definition in the midrange frequencies and are boomy and bassy. I do own a couple of sennheiser headphones and I wouldn't call them 'bad', but they're no good value for money compared to philips, akg or beyer.
But if you like the AKG K141, you might like the Sennheiser HD25. They are real monitoring headphones. Not sure if you were looking for headphones, but you might want to remember this for future reference :)

Skull candy isn't very expensive. It's just a piece of design so I can't be bothered about those. I am a bit bothered that so many people fall for Bose. It's a pity.

Funny story you tell about the headphones. I did something similar. My exes' parents have Bose 201's in their living room. I went there a couple of times a year to puppysit their dogs and I actually bought a set of (purple!) wharfedale Denton 3xp speakers at a thriftstore the first time I was there, just to replace the boses. It was just awful. After that first time I used to bring my own little Yamaha NX100's...

Oh, shake your buddy's hand for me because of his brilliant headphone taste.
And when he's asleep, silently whisper to him 'Genelec'. He will thank you later :D.

Audio Teachnica AD-700 or ATH-M50 would be good options and can run fine directly off the ipod too.

Oh yeah! AT has definitely got some nice headphones too :).
I'm not very common with their headphones (I love their phono cartridges though) but I guess when you buy a not too expensive AT, you'll be fine :)

Koss KSC 75 is the best headphone you can get i think.They simply sounds great. They are razor sharp, along with an open, clear sound that makes listening to high quality mp3s and cds from your laptop or mp3 player a pleasure.It will cost you around 19 pounds but the quality is best.

Just picked up Grado SR60i. They work great without amplification and are very reasonable priced, at $80. Highly recommend.

Grado knows their stuff.
