Does anyone know of any noise gate software programs? I'm starting to get into Let's Plays and I'm picking up quite a bit of background noise, even after trying to minimize it. My room is not ideal, but it's what I have for the time being. I'm using an MXL 990 and so far my only solution is to record gameplay footage first, and then record audio over that, then filter out noise that way, but I would like to occasionally record both the footage and commentary at the same time.

I haven't tried it, but this looks like something you could use.

Not sure what kind of DAW you use but look into the Waves Plugins on sale. They have a few really good noise suppressors.

I agree that pro tools is a little bit complicated and in my opinion overpriced. i personally use reaper which actually has more midi capabilities than pro tools. DAW choice is really all preference though whatever makes you feel most comfortable as a producer

i use reaper because i love the simplicity behind it
i purchase plugins from waves, eventide, ik multimedia you name it but as far as DAW goes i stick with reaper but it really doesnt matter its all about personal preference and whatever makes you comfortable as a producer

Im not knocking reaper but Pro Tools does about 1000000 times more for recording/mixing/postproduction/etc than reaper. Not to mention any major studio is going to be running it and recording sessions in it.

Generally speaking noise gates should not be used with too restrictive setting when recording vocals or speech, because they tend to cut off the quieter sounds and make the recording sound unrealistic. Sometimes a combination of noise gates and the noise reduction feature (like you find in Audacity) works best (at leat for me).

I am using Ardour, a MIDI-Keyboard (old YAMAHA), a Fender Mustang I for picking up the guitar signal and a AudioTechnica AT2020 USB+ for speech and vocals.

Yeah DItto , i wouldnt gate while recording , try gating on the mix down or if youre doing it for speech / dialogue, ducking mode is ok.

You can get a free plug in from Plug In Boutique called EFEKTOR Silencer , never used it but its free or of you got a few bucks try the Gatekeeper by Polyverse , its pretty cool.

Seems like a sensible value, then, at that point.
Rationale is a strong DAW. Definitely worth that value cut, imo.

A great book about all things mixing and mastering.

Especially worthwile is the second part of the book, which consists of a hundred+ Pages of interviews with production big shots

You can download the whole thing for free, just type in the title

Should I buy this new one?

I bought an Orb Synth plugin for $5 before for my production. Now, they have a new release, it's kinda expensive than before, not sure what to do? I already read a review, have you guys tried this?
