Default Help with making own distortion pedal

I was thinking of making my own distortion pedal at some point. But before I can do that I need to understand how the electric circuit inside the pedal works. Let's take this simple distortion pedal circuit first:

I do know what the most components are (exept how I should connect the two "grounded" spots below R6 and R9. Are they supposed to be the - side of the +9V input voltage?), but I also need to know how changing the values of the components affect to the sound. Also if you know how to improve this circuit by adding something to it let me know about that too and how that affects the sound. And lastly what's the maximum current that should go through the circuit to prevent breaking the instrument or amp?
