How many people on this thread are do music production. Whether you make your own hip-hop/electronica beats or multitrack live instruments, let me know what you do, what equipment/software you use, what your working on now, or just about anything else you can think of..

I did production and engineering on all our past albums. We mainly just went cheap (12 channel mixer, Cakewalk Pro Audio 9, several descent mics, etc.). Right now, we are working on a new band, trying to get things off the ground. This time I hope we can go to a real studio to get a more polished sound. I'm guessing I will still be filling the roll of producer (at least to some degree), but I would like to have someone else do engineering. I've definatly had alot of fun with all of it though, and when I finish up an album I wish I was working on a new one. Always fun to get song layed down on plastic!

I'm envious! So far Iv'e worked professionally as a live sound tech and I also produce my own electronic music, but I'm dying to get in the studio with some musicians.

^ I've done the live sound tech as well. Working with musicians in a studio setting can be a pain in the butt though. Sometimes you have to sit through so many takes until they get it right. And your ears and head start to hurt from hearing the same thing over and over again. Don't get me wrong, it can be loads of fun, but there are also the "I'm gonna rip all my hair out" moments.

ive just opened up a studio with a friend of mine in our practice space. we actually just got done doing a one hour long recording for an experimental band that came in to record with us.

i had planned to open up a studio under a local business who are changin premises, but no joy with new premises yet,,,,so i have a garage full of stuff.

all my recording is computer based on a 2.4gig p4 with 1 gig ram and 200gb hdd.

i use vegas 6.0a,cos even though it's mainly video based, i found it to be great!

my desk is a behringer sl2442fx pro (16 mono,4 stereo, dual digi fx)
mics at the minute,,,just two mxl 990s
monitors :- alesis m1 mkII active(100watt each)


at the minute i just record my own music,
so it's acoustic guitar, sometimes piano, and vocals.

lookin to invest in a set of drum mics if anyone has any advice on whats good (on a budget of < £300)

honestly, and i found this out from the best producer in my area, sm57's can be used to mic all drums real well. maybe getting a beta bass drum mic too. and for overheads, any good condenser mics will do. (make sure your board is phantom powered at least 48v). i use 57s on my rack, snare, and floor tom. a beta in the bass and two mxl condeser overhead mics.
