How to do playback/backing tracks Live?

Hey!

I would like to know about doing playback live. I would play guitar and sing, and then have other instruments coming from playback. I am on the verge of buying a new computer for my music stuff. So if the best way is to use a computer to play, then I'll have to take it into consideration.

Are there other options?.. seems odd that I would use a mouse in the middle of the gig to click for the next backing track.

And if it is a computer, how do I connect it to the mixer?
What program/file type would be the best?
I'm used to using PCs, but would a Mac be more reliable?
