My bassist just got a nice mexican P-Bass
Fender is the way to go.
Cheap... but pro quality... they'll run you around 400
good guitar.

Try ESP or LTD. Their basses are awesome, im getting the 30th year anniversiary bass hopefully, if I can find somewhere that sells it! http://www.espguitars.com/basses_anniversary.htm

or the Warwick Vampyr

also check out the schecter diamond series custom basses. my old bassist has one and its sweet as hell. maybe a little pricey, but not too horrible, and they play like nothing else.
