Trumpet or Trombone?
I'm really looking forward to playing my first instrument, I've narrowed it down to either the trumper or the trombone, but I'm not sure how different the sound is between the two.
Here's a clip of one of my favorite bands, Reel Big Fish. I want to know what instrument is because thats the sound I'm going for. media.putfile.com/Sell-Out-clip Thanks in advance. |
Uh well im inclined to say "well it depends one what you want" but that answer is as good a no answer. In my opinion; trumpet.
Trombone is fun, it seems cool, but the great players are relegated to the back of the obscurity bus becuase the instrument doesn't lend its self to much. Trumpet can and will be featured in plenty of great bands, my pick, rock the trumpet. |
Thanks for the reply.
Well, I want to be able to play solos in a band, and I want an instrument that can vary how high or low the sound is. I really like the trumpet (if it is) in some Ska bands, but dislike it's high notes and find them a pain to listen too. As for the trombone, I haven't really heard it in any of the bands I listen to. I'm guessing it plays in sync with the trumpet. Also what do you mean by "doesn't lend it self to much"? |
Alright, a Reel Big Fish fan!:yeah:
I hold both instruments in the same respect but I would recommend the Trumpet, though the trombone is essential to most bands, you can go a lot farther with the Trumpet. I know a great trumpet player who is amazing and yet there is still so much more he can learn. Plus, the trumpet is easier to incorporate in many types of bands and is a big thing in many Ska bands. Hoped this helps. :D |
The more I get told to play the trumpet instead of the trombone, the more I'm inclined to play the trombone :P. I guess I'm just crazy.
Muzak are you saying that the trumpet is easier top ut in differnt types of bands than the trombone? So, the trombone is essential to most bands (I'm assuming you mean Ska), but the trumpet isn't essential? Is there any well known Ska band that you know of that just has one of the two? |
Yeah, a trombonist is a important to a Ska band but the trumpet is great in any all around bands and is a great way to test you skill.
From what I have seen from many Ska bands, the most common types of horn sections are (the number of instruments isn't that important in the long run): Saxophone and Trombone. Less Than Jake The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Trumpet and Trombone: Reel Big Fish Forces of Evil (same thing but whatever) Trumpet, Saxophone, Trombone: The Hippos Bad Manners Catch 22 (new) Madness Like I said, the Trombone is a big thing In most ska bands while it seems to be either sax or trumpet or both. I personally see the trumpet to be a great instrument all around in and type of music while the trombone is important in ska. Just my opinion in this. I hope you enjoy whatever instrument you pick, I play Alto Saxophone and love it. :D |

There are a lot....but most dont last longer than 3 months because they realize it takes practice
|
pssh, if thats the suggestion, get a piano. Listen man, Miles Davis is the quintessential trumpet player....who's his trombone counterpart.

i am a professional trumpet player, and i do agree with him if you are playing the trombone in a band with more than 5 or 6 members, you will ALWAYS take the back seat to the trumpets (except for solos) it is also easier to play notes on a trumpet faster than a trombone (unless you want your arms to fall off) the trombone is also featured in hundreds of ska songs (like the trumpet), so if you want that genre, give her a shot (simply my advice) once you play any brass instrument, its not that hard to switch, but it depends on how musical you are. |
Hmm, What intrument usually plays more solos?
|
Trumpet....faster solos....you'll pop your arm out of socket trying to do some fast solos on a trombone..hah
|
I choose trumpet personally because I think it's easier to play than a trombone.
|
Choosing an easier instrument will never get anyone anywhere...if we all wanted to play easy instruments we'd all be playing Tamborine and the recorder...Maybe a few percussionists knocked the Triangle
|
Trombone, then learn to play FAST!!!!
Like Voodoo Glow Skulls Speed Metal Horns RULE!!!! |

I still choose trombone though. |
I was in the color guard(flags) for high school, and in music theory few semesters, and top choir, so I know musicians. From a social point, tumpet players are egotistical. Because its fairly easy, they learn fast, and they excel quicker from the rest. Trombone takes some time, but they are more modest and poilte in the long run. And the Trombone has a better sound. So I would choose trombone if I were you. And thats for introducing me to putfile just now....so I could show you this, its trombone, see if its the sound you're looking for. I prefer it to Trumpet.
Click here to watch Chris-Bryan-and-Derek-session-1 This is during one of my music theory classes when the teacher wasnt there, and a few of the more talented students got up and started doing some jazz band stuff. Presenting Bryan on Guitar, Chris on Piano and Derek on Trombone. I think Aaron does a little sax in there too, but its hardly audible. Hope this helps! |
Well today I went to a music store and I ended up buying a Windsor Student B-flat Trumpet (Model Number TR-5219, for C $289 (USD $247). The salesperson was very friendly and said if I don't like it/ my teacher says its a bad model I can return it for full refund within a week.He also said it's made in China, as opposed to Europe or the US, but it's a good student model.
It came with a really cool plush hard case along with oil and polishing cloths. I don't know if its a good deal because I know nothing about trumpets, so I'm just hoping I didn't waste my money. So thanks for all the help you guys gave me on my desicion. Right now It's sitting in the case, I'm afraid to touch it, let alone put the mouth piece in :P. |
