I'm lefty, wanna play with righty guitar?

I have played drums for about 8 years or so, and not to brag (but gotten pretty good), i am just tired of the inconvenience of them. I have a acoustic guitar at my house, but its the normal kind for right handed people. Is it ok to learn holding it the other way, with highest string facing up?

Basically can i play i right handed guitar on left.? Or will that mess everything up?

I really want to learn, i just dont want to have to spend money on another guitar.

If it was good enough for Hendrix...

Or you could restring it.

Blain 10-05-2007 10:06 PM

That'd be the best thing lol.

Dr_Rez 10-06-2007 02:11 PM

So if i take my friends right handed electric one, and have it restrung the opposite way for me, itll work?

sleepy jack 10-06-2007 02:16 PM

Yep

Well thats actually not possibly. You cant restring a guitar like that...its just not how it works (i found out today)

right-track 10-09-2007 03:22 PM

If you don't want to buy a left handed guitar and you never played before, just learn to play it upside down.

And there's nothing stopping you getting it altered.

Dr_Rez 10-09-2007 05:09 PM

Well i started today playing righty so ill get used to it I already learned the song otherside! :)

right-track 10-09-2007 05:18 PM

It's not too difficult to have the guitar altered and it shouldn't cost a great deal, by having the nut and the saddle (on the bridge) replaced to accomodate the strings.
That way you can play left handed with the guitar upside down, but with the strings the right way up.

anticipation 10-09-2007 05:50 PM

mine hooks left too, but i can still play a right handed guitar fine.

Exodizer 10-30-2007 12:01 AM

If you wanna play blues or something not to techniqually challenging. Hendrix is a perfect example of this genius with soul and chord progressions but not techniqually great. In the begining the left hand (while playing right handed) is the one that requires more dexterity, but as you get better (most likely into shredding) the right hand requires more and more dexterity until the right hand is the hard part. Like I said for most music it doesn't matter and if you like acoustic rock or modern rock or blues it really doesn't matter but for jazz fusion or shredding and epspecially classical it matters quite a bit.

harvey96 11-12-2007 08:38 AM

Just my crazy idea. Just proceed to learn with your right hand so as to have the opportunity to train left side of your brain. It just a matter of getting used to it. I am a "righty" but I learnt to use left hand (just for fun)to do some of the things. Now, I hold toothbrush with my left hand by default. I can write with left hand with readable handwriting.

The only regret is, I'm not being smarter by using both side of my brain... :(

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-12-2007 10:52 AM

Joe Strummer was left handed.

He taught himself how to play right handed.

joyboyo53 11-12-2007 02:10 PM

or try learning both ...

harvey96 11-14-2007 08:58 AM

Don't worry. U won't mess things up.

Lol thanks for positive comment. And im learning, slowly, but still learning.

harvey96 11-15-2007 09:21 AM

It would be helpful if you try to do small little things also with your right hand. For e.g. when you hold your coffee mug, pick up things from the floor, handling your remote control.......

thebassistX 11-21-2007 07:39 AM

actually it doesnt really matter....im a lefty and i learned guitar right handed
in fact it might actually be easier because ur dominant hand (left) is handling the fretboard

fool on the hill 11-29-2007 10:43 AM

I'm left handed but I have always played right handed... whatever feels right... (no pun intended)

Scott Reeder is a leftie who plays a right handed 5 string bass upside-down. He's rather good.

UrbanAncients 12-17-2007 12:47 PM

Actually, I'm no guitar expert, I play the piano, but the string tightness on a guitar changes the pitch, the tighter the string, the higher the pitch. So if you totally twist the tuner-thingies, technically, you get the right notes and it would be the left way round.

At least that's what I think.

right-track 12-17-2007 01:51 PM

The string gauges wouldn't allow for that to happen UA.

6. Top E string (thickest)
5. A string (second thickest)
4. D string (third thickest)
3. G string (fourth thickest)
2. B string (fifth thickest)
1. Bottom E string (thinnest)

The grooves on the nut and the bridge accomadate the different gauge strings.
The nut and bridge have to be the other way round for a lefty.

UrbanAncients 12-18-2007 12:33 AM

Oh, well. My mistake! But can't you take the strings out, and then you could put them the left way round?

right-track 12-18-2007 05:11 PM

Nope.
Not unless you reversed the nut and the saddle on the bridge.
The saddle is set at an angle for intonation.

UrbanAncients 12-19-2007 09:05 AM

Okay, I'm gonna stop trying soon! My advice would be to sell the current guitar and use the money to buy a left handed guitar.

Greta 12-31-2007 09:37 AM

My friend is lefthanded and she has no problem playing righty guitar

Isn't that dependant on the individual guitar.

right-track 12-31-2007 09:45 AM

I know it is for acoustic.

littleknowitall 12-31-2007 09:50 AM

Im pretty sure you could still do it on like an epiphone or vintage or gibson.

right-track 12-31-2007 09:52 AM

Without reversing the nut?

Music Resource 01-05-2008 11:51 AM

As mentioned above, you could restring it and play it upside down and left-handed. Or, you could buy a left-handed guitar. Elliot Easton of The Cars plays a lefty.

right-track 01-05-2008 01:08 PM

So there you have it Rez.
Either learn to play a right handed guitar upside down, or have one modified, or you could always be a smart arse and buy a left handed guitar...

:pssst: they're for left handed people dontchaknow.
