They do sound ****in cool though |
To be honest, I think a lot of 'musicians' are offended by the idea that they can practise for 5 hours a day over 20 years honing their instrumental technique while another person can come along with next to no instrumental skill, write music and be called a musician.
And I laugh at that, because I think songwriting is by far the most important part of being a musician, to the point that instrument skills can be entirely eschewed. And this is coming from someone who plays keyboard and bass. |
So what would you say to session musicians and music teachers, many of which don't write songs?
You do have a point though, a good song is a good song, no matter how good your technical ability, or how long you've been playing. My 14 year old son has been playing for two years, and says he wants to "learn to play by playing" It's very rare he comes to me for technical help or guidence, and some of the stuff he's written is pretty top notch, no ultra fast solos, or complex chords yet, but just solid, well written riffs and hooks. To say I'm pleased and proud of what he's achieved so far, with very little input from outside sources , is an understatement. |
i use FL studio, there's over 1000 sounds on there.
how many different instruments does that give me acess to? it's not like you can just whip up somethin' that sounds good without putting some work into it. programing isn't easy. i put as much work into a song on FL as someone writing an acoustic guitar song, i just don't have to play it over and over again. another reason people prog is to add other instruments to their song. i know pleanty of people who play guitar, but can't affor bass or drums. so they put in the drums and bass with the guitar. xcomboverx uses drumsynths |

Aside from being masters at their respective instruments, I'd say most session musicians are great musicians in other aspects too - such as having a superb ear and sight reading etc. |
Agreed there
