Recommend me a guitar...

I want a cheap guitar that would be good for noise rock type stuff. I was looking at a Jagmaster the other day, but it sold and I have no clue if I can find another one. Plus, I don't know much about electric guitars since I have only been playing classical stuff on my acoustic for almost a year now. So what type of guitar/s should I be looking at?

Price range?

Preferably below $300, but possibly $400.

Buy Squier Black and Chrome Fat Strat Electric Guitar at Musician's Friend

Pretty versatile.

Thanks, that seems good. I will take that one into consideration.

if you seriously want to make noise rock type stuff then don't bother getting a new guitar. go to a pawn shop and pick the coolest looking thing on the wall for under $250. use the extra cash from your price range for a fuzz box and possibly a 2nd effect.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking of doing. Haven't got around to it yet either. There is also a pretty big flea market around here so I am also thinking of heading down there.

And I don't want to make noise rock, but I want to make music influenced by noise, and all that stuff.

flea markets and pawn shops are hit and miss but it's your best bet for finding something other than a default strat looking thing (squire) or a default les paul looking thing (epiphone).

you won't get good noisy crackles, hiss, pops, scratches or scrapes from a new guitar. just what sort of bands / guitarists are you looking towards in terms of noise influenced rock?

Inuzuka Skysword 05-11-2008 11:29 AM

Well, Shoegaze stuff like My Bloody Valentine, noise stuff Sonic Youth's early stuff, and droning stuff like Boris.

Like, I don't really want to make noise, but I want to make music influenced by it.

then you definitely don't want to spend your whole budget on a squire. the kind of distortion pedal will likely be more important than the make and model of whatever guitar you use.

go an OLP axis or the like
the pickups will help you out and they are far superior to the fender squier and epiphone crap in that price range.

Try to get an ibanez, very good guitars and they have a few models in your price range that are good.
