I need help from actual musicians . . . PLEASE

Okay, so this is probably the weirdest request you'll ever see, but I'm a writer (actually make a living out of it! lol ) and I desperately need your help.

I'm writing a book about a character who sings. It's extremely difficult to convey this on paper and it's really kicking my butt at the moment. If I listen to a song, I can get it in my head just right; on paper, not so much.

Here's my problem. I think it would help to describe the scene if I actually understood what's going on. For example, if it's a guitar riff vs a different guitar action (forgive my ignorance here; you can see why this is so difficult for me.)

The song (blush) is actually a cover of Tool's Sober. If I tell you at which point in the song I'm having a problem with (like 1 minute 14 seconds, etc) can you help me figure out what is actually happening in the song -- i.e. what chord, etc?

Weird request, I know, but ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

i dont really understand what it is that you are asking...

so it's about a singer but you're hung up on the guitar bit?

the part in question is a simple melody played on the G string over a droning open D string. the melody repeats itself but the 4th time the melody moves up to the 5th fret instead of dropping back to the open string. at that point the guitar player is playing a fretted C over and open D. it's close enough to an octave to still sound clearly dissonant while increasing the tension in the passage before getting heavy again.

it's also a really easy part to play. the kind of thing a beginner could pick up in minutes.

Thank you Mr.Dave, that's EXACTLY what I was looking for. Totally appreciate it! :)

Oh, and yes, hung up on the guitar bit cause I didn't want her to just stand there. It's hard to explain, but I want her body to move in a certain way based on the melody of the music.

I wrote the piece this weekend, but this will help to tighten it. Thank you again for responding.

I think you're completely off your trolley and talking utter bollocks

no worries, but in that case why not just check out some of the live tool videos on youtube to see how maynard moves during certain parts?

Thanks, I'll take as a compliment! :)

Trust me, as a writer, I've had to put myself into some seriously weird situations . . . as well as imagine them.

Great idea. But knowing the details makes a big difference.
