Replacing nut on guitar

Alright, I need to replace the nut on my telecaster custom but, I've never replaced the nut before. I'm not taking it to my local instrument to have it replaced for 60 bucks because I'm not made of money. I do have a pre-carved nut but, it needs to be sanded down in order for it to fit... do I need wood glue or something to keep it in place?

yeah a little bit of wood glue wouldn't hurt. even plain white school glue would work. the tension of the strings will keep the nut in place when the guitar is tuned, the glue is just there to hold it in place while you're changing the strings.

mr dave is pretty right, but be careful. It can still jiggle around a bit when the strings are in. Maybe get it glued on, and put pressure on it for a couple hours while it dries (not much pressure, just enough to keep it on the neck).
That way your assured it'll be staying and not breaking your strings or coming off.
