guitar string dampener : bad habit?

So i was browsing youtube yesterday and found a guitar player using a 'hair band' like elastic ring over the nut/first fret.....when i dug more into it..i found out that it was called a string dampener that cuts out noise when playing with high gain...and to mute accidental notes/open strings while playing..
i tied a soc around my nut and viola it did make a hell of a lot of difference...tapping was so much more easier and my over playing sounded better...

what do you guys think about this device?...is it bad for my technique?
but on the flipside i sound much better when im using one which is the ultimate goal anyway...

I was faced with the same issue because playing w/ a high gain setting really showed off my sloppiness but I really knida' look at that "residual noise" as feedback for how well you're building your technique and precision. Given enough practice it will go away and you'll be a much better player.

Yup ur right.....i might use it on rare occasions still (its too tempting :P)

happy playing
