So guys what do you like better a 5 string bass or teh good old classic 4 string?
For me im all about the 4 string.

I've only played a bass once in my life but, four strings does seem to be enough.

5's are nice, but that low B should be used sparingly for the best effect.

I just like basses. I'll play any bass I can get my hands on. 4, 5, 6, 7, 11. Doesn't ****in' matter.

I learned on a fret-less 4, but I primarily play 5 now. If that makes me a douchebag, then I challenge... TO BASS OFF!!! DunDun DUUNNNN!!!!

seems like a pointless question to me. whatever gets the job done.

i think the real question here is active or passive pickups. that has a definite impact upon the sound a bass guitar produces.

i mostly play a fretless 5. it got to the point where i was playing my 4 string and reaching for notes that simply didn't exist. for me it's not about extra low end so much as extra range and deeper tone. i somewhat disagree with Satchmo about sparing the low B for max effect - maybe the open B, but not the string itself.

as for 12s, i'd really like to try the variant Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam had during the recording of Ten. it was a conventional 4 string but each string was in turn tripled.

I see a lot of 4 string players switch to 5's and just use the low B as their "root string" out of habit. I admit, i do kinda' see the low B as the "ace in the hole" so to speak.
