Layering with keyboard
 

Hey, I am brand new to this forum and kind of brand new to music (not really)

This looks like a nice forum and I look forward to participating in the future.

Now to my question, I was just wondering what key board I could buy for a reasonable price that has the ability to record and layer things.

All i am looking to do it so lay down a bass line and play on top of it.

What's your price range?

Also, do you absolutely need it to be all in one package? Because you may find it advantageous to use a music program to record your bass lines and other things, and use a midi controller to play soft synths in your music program.
In the end, it's a better solution if you eventually decide to compose a song and retain maximum editing power.

My price range is 150$ to about 300$ give or take.

I would normally go with the option you mentioned and eventually will probably need what you mentioned, but for right now I am lookin for something to do some casual (often times joking around) performances.

I also want a bunch of knobs and switches that distort the sound :) :P

There's not a lot out there in that price range that isn't just a Casio keyboard.
Just to clarify, you want the keyboard to record external audio? Or are you just talking about it recording what you're playing on the keyboard and playing it back while you improv?
If it's the latter, all you really need is a keyboard workstation.

$150 to $300? Dang, Casio is really the only option there. $800 could get you a used Roland, but if you really want quality then you'll need to save up some extra funds for at least $1300 min.

I was looking for a keyboard that would record what I have played on it and play it back to me so I could play something on top of it easier.

I didnt know that stuff was that expensive... haha i'm pretty out of the loop I suppose though.

Im probably stuck with a casio yall think though? any specific one you would suggest?

Honestly, if you're going to make any kind of monetary investment in music equipment, you may as well save your money and make a good one in something that A) you won't outgrow and B) will last.

If I were you, I'd save for this:

If you spend 300 dollars on a keyboard that you may quickly get bored of, that's less money you'll have when you finally realize that you want something better.

Just my 2 cents.

You could also look into a sampler. You could pickup something cheap like a Boss SP-303 which would allow you to not only sample, but loop multiple sounds, build drum patterns, you can play the pads like a keyboard, and you can apply different effects to your sounds. Cheap and flexible.
